Former ATP star Greg Rusedski is eagerly waiting for a final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the 2024 Wimbledon championships. As the grass-court swing gets underway and the players prepare for themselves for the ultimate test in the first week of July, Rusedski is expecting a title clash between the top two players on the tour currently.

He says that the rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz is maturing slowly and it is a great sign for the sport. Rusedski also cited the example of such intense rivalries in the past and how it helped tennis as a whole. He claimed that top players playing in Grand Slam finals raise the stakes.

Rusedski said that while it is great to have champion players, it becomes equally important to have a rivalry between them. The former British tennis star cited the example of the rivalry between the Big Three of men’s tennis.

I think that will be a great Wimbledon final – they [Alcaraz and Sinner] have one major apiece this year and they met at the French Open. For me, you need rivalries. It’s great to have great champions and great players, but what made the Big Three so special was that you had Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic playing in majors the whole time. So for me, the public has to see the two best players or the ones setting the records playing in finals at majors week in, week out – as that’s the peak.

Greg Rusedski heaps praise on Carlos Alcaraz

Greg Rusedski also spoke about Carlos Alcaraz in particular. The Briton praised Alcaraz for his title-winning performance at the 2024 Roland Garros and claimed that the Spaniard has got an unbelievable pedigree. As Alcaraz beat Rafael Nadal to become the youngest player to win a Slam on all three surfaces, Rusedski is impressed.

Now, he is eagerly waiting to see Alcaraz take the centerstage on the grass court. Rusedski is expecting a good season for Alcaraz on grass as well.

I think the French Open this year for Carlos, everything kind of came into place...But to win on three surfaces and be the youngest guy to win on clay, grass, and hard courts, the guy to do that before was a certain guy called Rafael Nadal, so he’s got an unbelievable pedigree and I’m excited to see if he can transition his form and get healthy for Wimbledon.

Notably, Alcaraz has the huge task of defending his crown in London. The Spaniard beat Novak Djokovic in a thrilling final last year to win the championships. Alcaraz has started his preparations as he competes at the Queen’s Club championships. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner is playing at the Halle Open to kickstart his grass-court campaign.
