In Short
  • Greg Rusedski praised Jannik Sinner's dominance in tennis, calling it "genius" and "brilliant."
  • Sinner has won nine consecutive matches, including three clay-court Masters 1000 titles this season.
  • Daniil Medvedev expressed frustration over Sinner's medical timeout for cramps during their semifinal match.

Watching Jannik Sinner clinch titles one after the other has become boring? Greg Rusedski definitely doesn’t think so.

Sinner has not yet lost a match since his exit in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open because, afterward, he completed the Sunshine Double, becoming the eighth man to accomplish this feat. Then, after spoiling Carlos Alcaraz‘s title defense in Monte Carlo and reclaiming his No.1 ranking with this win, the Italian ace secured his ninth consecutive win over Alexander Zverev in the final of the Madrid Open.

Sinner then became the second man, after Rafael Nadal, to win the three clay-court Masters 1000 in a single season with his win over Casper Ruud in the Italian Open final. Rusedski, during his Off Court with Greg podcast, talked about Sinner’s complete dominance.

It’s never boring watching someone trying to achieve what he’s doing. It’s genius, it’s masterhood, it’s playing at the highest level day in, day out. I mean, it’s absolutely brilliant. I mean, there’s very few players, and I think it’s number six in a row in the Master Series, and this year he’s won every single one. I can’t remember somebody winning nine in a year, and that’s something he’s on for, which is quite incredible.

The job is not done yet because after a much-needed rest, the four-time Grand Slam champion will be starting his bid for his first French Open title, and the win will make him the seventh man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam and the first one since Alcaraz in this year’s Australian Open. Sinner will also be completing the Surface Slam if he emerges victorious in Paris.

Sam Querrey on Jannik Sinner’s controversial timeout during his match against Daniil Medvedev

Jannik Sinner dealt with physical discomfort during his semifinal match against Daniil Medvedev and dropped the second set. The officials had to halt the match due to rain, after which Sinner eventually clinched a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win.

Sinner appeared to receive treatment for cramps after taking a medical timeout. Medvedev was unhappy with this, since timeouts for cramps are not allowed, and he complained to the chair umpire.

Later at the press conference, Medvedev urged the tennis bosses to allow timeouts for cramps to avoid such controversy. And now Sam Querrey has given his opinion on the same.

It feels to me that outside of Carlos, Medvedev is the only guy who has kind of been close [to beating Jannik Sinner]. It was at Indian Wells where I believe it was 7-6, 7-6 in an absolute battle. You feel like Medvedev could have won a breaker if it goes long. Then, here they have that battle of a match, it gets called for a rain delay. Jannik had the trainer out for the cramps. We have got to find a rule in tennis here.

Sam Querrey said on the Nothing Major podcast

The win helped the South Tyrol native improve his head-to-head record to 10-7. Medvedev was chasing his second clay-court title and his first Big Title since the 2023 Italian Open.

The main draw of the French Open is scheduled to start on May 24th. It’s the only tournament where the Russian ace has not yet progressed beyond the quarterfinals, and reached that stage just once, in 2021. Last year, he lost in the first round.

Last year in the tournament, Sinner, in spite of a two-set lead and three championship points in the fourth set, ended up losing the match to defending champion Alcaraz, who won’t be playing because of a wrist injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open.
