Despite claiming the Cincinnati Open on Monday (August 19), Jannik Sinner has found himself in the middle of a storm that’s shaking the tennis world. The Italian was cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after failing a doping test. However, Tennis legend Greg Rusedski has questioned whether justice was truly served in the World No. 1’s case.

Tennis stars are no strangers to failing doping tests. Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep were slammed with a two and four-year bans, respectively, after failing doping tests. Their bans were later reduced after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport to 15 months and nine months, respectively. But, for Sinner, a ban was never put in place.

The Italian tested positive for Clostebol, a banned substance, and the case was kept under wraps since March. The 23-year-old defended that he was unaware of how the substance got into his body. The ITIA eventually ruled that Sinner would only be stripped of his Indian Wells Masters ranking points and prize money.

The ruling has caused an uproar in tennis. Rusedski questioned the fairness of the ruling on social media, stating that the tennis body needs to be impartial in its judgment of all players.

The whole Jannik Sinner case is interesting how quickly it is dealt with compared to other cases which have taken many more months and years. How is this accepted and resolved so quickly? The system needs to do better for all players, not just the very best?

The doping case has taken the tennis world by storm, with many expressing surprise that the international body hid the case for six months. Cahill defended Sinner and explained why the Italian continued to play during his provisional suspension.

The reason he was able to play after the provisional suspension was that they located the exact place where the incident occurred and were able to explain what happened with the spray.

Sinner has been one of the standout players of the season and the only men’s player to win two Masters 1000 titles this year. He won a total of five titles this season, two more than Carlos Alcaraz.
