“I was having a glass of wine…” Gregg Popovich reveals how Klay Thompson ‘wrecked his whole night’
Dallas Mavericks start season strong with 120-109 win over San Antonio Spurs, fueled by Klay Thompson's impressive 22-point debut.

Coach Gregg Popovich and Klay Thompson
It was a great night for the Dallas Mavericks as they kicked off their season with a 120-109 win over the visiting San Antonio Spurs. The standout performance of the night belonged to Klay Thompson, who made a strong debut in Mavericks uniform.
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, however, was less than thrilled that he had to face Thompson. Popovich in a press conference revealed that he was frustrated when the Mavericks landed the renowned shooter in free agency.
‘Oh my God, how the hell did they do that?’ That’s the honest to God truth. I was probably having a glass of wine somewhere and it wrecked my whole night. But you know about Klay. He’s special. It’s a great addition, of course.

Klay Thompson impressed with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including six three-pointers. After the game, he thrilled the Mavs fans when he expressed his excitement about donning Mavs Blue.
The Spurs who were led by reigning Rookie of the Year and second-year star Victor Wembanyama, aimed to improve from last season’s woes but that wasn’t to be so as they left the American Airlines Arena with a loss. As they push forward, they’ll face stiffer competition, including repeated matchups against Thompson and the Mavericks.
Klay Thompson makes immediate impact in Mavericks debut
Klay Thompson made a historic debut for the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night, as he broke the franchise record for most three-pointers in a debut. He sank six of 10 three-point attempts and scored 22 points.
In one notable instance that got trending on the internet, Luka Doncic threw a pass to a wide-open Thompson and began celebrating with the commentators before Thompson had even released the ball, which showcased the instant chemistry between the two stars.
"He's looking at you and I."

Furthermore, Thompson’s impressive performance was fueled by his connection with teammate Doncic, who assisted on five of Thompson’s six three-pointers. The Mavs face a tougher opponent in the Phoenix Suns in their next game, while the Spurs need to bounce back when they face the Houston Rockets on home turf.
