It’s not lost on anyone that Gunther is one of the best bell-to-bell wrestlers to exist in any era of this business. But he’s now got the acknowledgment from someone who has been calling WWE action for nearly three decades—Michael Cole.
The latter was a guest on The Sal Licata Show. During the chat, Cole was asked to name the greatest wrestling match he’d ever seen. And not much of a surprise, Cole didn’t have a flat-out solitary pick. It’s simply because there have been several of those great matches, and picking one would’ve meant serving injustice to others.
So he chose to answer this curveball differently. ‘The Voice of WWE’ said there’s a gentleman in the company right now who gives him goosebumps every time he wrestles out there, and it’s Gunther. Cole added that he loves calling his matches.

“It’s hard to answer that question because there’s been so many, and I don’t wanna do any disrespect to anybody out there, because I know whatever my answer is, there’s probably 10 that were better… pic.twitter.com/ObwPtPCZHA
Cole hailed the longest-reigining WWE Intercontinental Champion as the best professional wrestler on the planet today. The play-by-play commentator for Raw affirmed that the fans either adore the way he carries himself or the remaining ones loathe him with almost no mixed feelings about the Vienna-born wrestler.
There is a gentleman in our business right now who, every time he wrestles a match, I get goosebumps. I love to call the match. I believe he is the best professional wrestler on the planet today, and that is Gunther. There’s such a mix on him. Either people hate him, or they love him. He is such an old school throwback…
Michael Cole on The Sal Licata Show
After calling him a throwback to the old school era of wrestling, Cole promoted that this week’s Raw will be held at Madison Square Garden, and he explicitly teased Gunther‘s return on the show by saying that if there’s ever a place for him to be, it’s the Garden.
Continuing his assessment of ‘The Ring General’ in the aforementioned conversation, Michael Cole stated that the former World Heavyweight Champion has transmogrified himself into the ‘Career Killer’ after having retired the likes of Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles in just over half a year’s time. The legendary commentator didn’t just stop there and asserted that Gunther’s an artist who’s incredibly fun to watch in the ring.
For the record, ever since arriving on the main roster in April 2022, the former leader of Imperium has yet to be pinned in a non-title singles match. The only names to hold singles victories over him are CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, and Jey Uso. But every one of those matches had championship belts on the line.
What is up with Gunther’s road to WrestleMania?
Gunther hasn’t appeared on WWE television since dispatching Dragon Lee on the 3/2 edition of Raw. It’s been over three weeks, and his absence continues to pique the fans. He’s not even dealing with any sort of an injury to justify his exclusion. The situation shows that he was originally planned to feud with Rey Mysterio to then have a match with the WWE Hall of Famer at WrestleMania 42.

A rib injury to Mysterio in late January derailed the inevitable interaction between Gunther and the WWE legend that would’ve kicked off their rivalry in full steam. The luchador wrestling great recently revealed in an interview that he’s been feeling a lot better than before. Mysterio, however, didn’t provide a timeframe for his return.
It had drastically imperiled Gunther’s WrestleMania direction, and there was pessimism about it possibly keeping ‘The Career Killer’ off this year’s WrestleMania. But if the latest bit from WrestleVotes Radio via Fightful Select is to be believed, Gunther is still expected to be featured in a significant manner at The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Some fans are manifesting an open challenge from the Austrian only for it to be answered by one of the erstwhile Walter‘s most fierce rivals—Ilja Dragunov. ‘The Mad Dragon’ is only currently without a solid program that’ll assure him of a WrestleMania spot. WWE has the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone by pitting these men against each other at WrestleMania.
