Since Gunther lost his Intercontinental title to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL, he has shifted his focus to winning the King of the Ring tournament. His frustrations have only made him more powerful, as he effortlessly reached the semifinals. After an emphatic win over Jey Uso, The Ring General booked his ticket to Saudi Arabia.
On the latest episode of Monday Night Raw, Gunther squared off against Jey Uso in the next round of the King of the Ring tournament. Both superstars came into this match with respective wins over Kofi Kingston and Ilja Dragunov. The WWE Universe was excited to see who would come out on top, as they are two of the biggest stars on the red brand.
The Ring General started the match with complete dominance, delivering heavy chops to slow down The Yeet Master. Although Jey managed to land a big suicide dive outside the ring, the 36-year-old Superstar soon regained control and slowed the pace. In the final moments of the match, it looked like Uso was finally going to win thanks to a Spear and a Frog Splash, but his adversary kicked out at the last second.
The Imperium leader finished off the match with a combination of a Sleeper Hold and Kimura Lock. With the bracket completed on Raw, he will now set his sights on the semifinal match on the blue brand involving Randy Orton and Tama Tonga. Hence, it will be interesting to see who the other finalist in the tournament will be.
The WWE Universe made jokes on Gunther’s promo ahead of his match against Jey Uso
On the latest episode of Raw, Gunther cut a promo on his opponent, Jey Uso, ahead of their main event match. He roamed around the empty arena and praised the longest-reigning tag team champion for becoming one of the most popular superstars in WWE. However, his promo got people’s attention for a different reason.
When his picture of him cutting a promo in an empty arena surfaced online, fans couldn’t help but bring AEW into the conversation. The Jacksonville-based company has been on wrestling fans’ radar for not being able to fill the arena with the kind of roster they have. While some fans mocked WWE’s rival company by suggesting that The Ring General was making his debut there, others joked that he had simply opened the forbidden door.
There has been a constant ratings war between the two companies, as they have both taken indirect shots at each other. While WWE had the best year in the company’s history in 2023, AEW also welcomed some of the best wrestlers on the planet, such as Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay.
