Gunther’s WrestleMania 42 Participation in Doubt After Injury to Planned Legendary Opponent
Gunther doesn't know his WrestleMania opponent yet, and there's a chance that he might not wrestle at The Grandest Stage of Them All.
It’s a shame that Gunther, the man who has retired the likes of John Cena, AJ Styles, and Goldberg in a span of just over 6 months, doesn’t have his WrestleMania match scouted out with less than a month to go until showtime. However, the blame for it has to be pinned on an unfortunate injury to his planned opponent, who was Rey Mysterio.
BodySlam recently reported that ‘The Ring General’ was supposed to segue into a feud with the WWE Hall of Famer after the Austrian humiliated Dragon Lee on national television by ripping off his mask a couple of weeks ago on Raw. Gunther picked up the win after applying a sleeper hold on Lee, who gave his all before tapping out to the former world champion.
The aforementioned report added that with Mysterio suffering a rib injury at the end of January, it’s unknown at this juncture whether Gunther will even compete at WrestleMania or not. The former Imperium leader’s Mania participation does seem contingent on Mysterio’s recovery.
‘The Master of 619’ confirmed to Adrian Hernandez that he fractured both of his ribs while wrestling Austin Theory on the go-home edition of Raw for the Royal Rumble. The 51-year-old said he’s feeling a lot better now, but it’d take some time to heal up completely. Mysterio couldn’t give a timeline on his return.
‘The Biggest Little Man in WWE history’ missed last year’s WrestleMania in the most unfortunate of ways by suffering a torn groin and a ruptured eardrum just 24 hours before his scheduled match with El Grande Americano at the ‘Grandest Stage of Them All’. Mysterio would definitely want to get on the WrestleMania card this year, but it’s looking all bleak for him yet again.
Gunther shows off bulkier physique amid recent WWE absence
Gunther hasn’t appeared on WWE television since putting Dragon Lee in his place. The fans have been wondering about his whereabouts. ‘The Career Killer’ has finally quelled the speculation by posting on Instagram what he’s been up to of late.
The Vienna-born wrestler could be seen flexing his forearms, which have noticeably gotten bulkier. Gunther also upgraded his nickname by referring to himself as “The divine Career Killer.”

He made this moniker his own ever since retiring John Cena, which Gunther followed up by showing AJ Styles the door next. It appears like Rey Mysterio was next on that list. Even though Gunther vs. Mysterio would be a fun wrestling match, the fans are vehemently pushing back on it, presuming it’ll likely result in Mysterio’s in-ring career being done and dusted for good.
The fans are hellbent on Dominik Mysterio as the only acceptable option to retire his, whom he calls “deadbeat dad,” whenever the time comes. That’s why most of the wrestling fanatics aren’t high on Rey Mysterio taking on ‘The Ring General’ at WrestleMania 42 even if the great luchador gets the medical clearance to compete.
But what if the latter doesn’t get the nod in time? WWE would have to be ready with a backup plan to feature Gunther prominently at the pop-culture extravaganza with the kind of run he’s on. The erstwhile Walter couldn’t afford to sit out of WrestleMania, especially when he’s completely healthy and quite literally in the best shape of his life.
One suggestion that will kill two birds with one stone is if Gunther gets approached by Paul Heyman to tackle the Seth Rollins problem on his behalf. But this would only work if Bron Breakker doesn’t return in time to square off with Rollins. There are a number of variables at play right now. However, that shouldn’t be the cause of Gunther getting left off the WrestleMania card next month.
