The 2024 season witnessed the retirement of two tennis legends, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, leaving only Novak Djokovic to continue the legacy of the golden era of tennis. But the Serbian is already 37-year-old and is focused on winning more titles. However, ATP legend Guy Forget explained what will force Djokovic into retirement.

This year, Djokovic went through a mixed campaign. It was the first time in seven years that the 24-time major champion failed to win a single Grand Slam.

The Serbian did reach the semifinals and final of two major events but eventually lost to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Nevertheless, Djokovic will remember the 2024 season for winning an elusive title.

He finally managed to win the Olympic gold at the Paris Olympics after beating Spain’s Alcaraz in the final in straight sets. After that, Djokovic only managed to reach the Rolex Shanghai Masters final, but again he lost the title to Sinner. The 37-year-old’s struggles on the court has led several legends to point out that he is closer to retirement than ever.

ATP legend Guy Forget, in a recent interview, explained that Djokovic will retire when he begins to lose several matches on the Tour. He added that the Serbian is motivated by titles and records, and when he can’t achieve that again, he will hang his racket.

I think Novak is motivated by records. To reach a summit that has never been climbed. With one or two more, it will be Everest. He only trains for that. He loves the Australian Open. A player never wants to lose, it’s painful. I trust Novak to keep this state of mind. On the other hand, if he is physically diminished, if he loses against players who seem below him, I don’t know if he will enjoy playing for a long time. I don’t see Novak playing for several weeks losing matches, as Nadal did.

Nonetheless, Djokovic has already revealed that his intention is winning his 25th career Grand Slam next season. He will open his campaign at the Brisbane International ahead of the Australian Open.

Tennis legend hypes the chemistry between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray

Novak Djokovic’s partnership with Andy Murray has brought a lot of excitement to the sport ahead of the 2025 season. The pair, who were rivals right from their time at the Junior level, will now team up to win the Australian Open. Djokovic has won the Melbourne Grand Slam for a record ten times in his career.

Recently, tennis legend Tomas Berdych, who played against both Djokovic and Murray, shared that it will be interesting to watch the chemistry between the two former World No. 1’s.

Honestly, this is a very unique thing. I really want to see that in Australia. Obviously, I know both of them very well from my experience on the court. The pairing of two in our sport is something that never happened. But these two guys being on the same side will be really interesting to watch.

However, Berdych played Djokovic 28 times, winning on just three occasions, while he won six of his 17 meetings with Murray. He reached his career-high ranking of World No. 4 in 2015.
