The GOAT debate in basketball is perhaps the most debated topic in sports history. Every generation has a player that ultimately becomes synonymous with the game for fans. Luka Doncic found himself in a difficult situation when a reporter asked him to rank LeBron James on the GOAT list. While the Dallas Mavericks star has publicly expressed his admiration for the 4 x NBA Champion and is following his style of play, he is also associated with the Jordan brand. Choosing between Michael Jordan and LeBron puts the Slovenian star in a difficult spot.
A reporter asked Luka in a postgame interview about LeBron’s ranking in NBA All-time greats. The Mavericks star said LeBron is exceptional but politely declined to answer the question, saying he doesn’t do ranking of great players. “I’m not doing the rankings stuff, man. I just enjoy great basketball players. That’s it,” Doncic said. He added that Lebron is great but he wouldn’t do the ranking. “He’s an amazing player, an exceptional player, but I’m not doing the rankings stuff,” he added.
Doncic was coming from a bad game against the Portland Trail Blazers on a road game. He had a bad game for himself as he had one of the worst nights of the season. He scored only 15 points, while the entire Mavs roster crumbled and failed to perform under fierce defense from Portland. Damian Lillard had a big night as he led the Blazers with game-high 36 points. Seven of the players from the Blazers scored in double-digits.

Mavs’ superstar’s refusal to answer the question also raises the speculation that he considers Bron as the GOAt but doesn’t want to hamper his professional relationship with Michael. Fans caught him in his difficult spot and trolled him brutally on Twitter. One of the fans wrote, “Guys c’mon, my shoes are Jordan brand. Please stop.” Another fan wrote, “Smart man, did not take the bait.” Here are some more fans’ reactions on Twitter.
While many players do not shy away from picking their favorite and their top players in the GOAT debate. Doncic not answering the question is not a coincidence. In 2019, Doncic signed a 5-year contract with Michael Jordan’s Jordan Brand, which would have had “player exclusive” models available later with the brand.
While it is still not clear who Luka would choose as his favorite in the debate, he has openly expressed his admiration for LeBron James and growing up watching him. On the other hand, he has a professional relationship with Michael Jordan, LeBron’s rival in the debate. Perhaps, it is also possible that Luka genuinely doesn’t like ranking players and hence undermining their greatness on and off the floor.
