“I am proud of myself”: Suni Lee on inspiring next generation of Asian American young girls

Suni Lee
Suni Lee said that she is proud to be the source of inspiration for young Asian American girls in the next generation. The 19-year-old made history last year at the Tokyo Olympics after becoming the first Hmong American gymnast to compete at the Games.
Not only that, she later went on to win the gold medal in the individual all around event at the Olympics. She then moved on to collegiate gymnastics, and is currently competing at Auburn University with the Tigers, where she created history for the team. “Growing up I didn’t see a lot of Asian American women on the U.S. Gymnastics team, so to be one of the first Hmong Americans to win the Olympic gold medal is just absolutely amazing,” Suni said to people.com.

“My gymnastics career has helped change what’s expected for Hmong women because I decided to create my own path,” said Lee. The youngster said that it was sometimes hard for her to feel proud of herself, but she has realised that she has paved the way for the next generation.
“I am proud of myself for being somebody that younger girls can look up to. If you can see her, you can be her.” Suni has been a big part of representation, especially of the Hmong Americans in sports. She is not only inspiring the next generation of young gymnasts, but also making the sports world an inclusive place for new individuals to enter.
