Serena Williams was on the verge of a stunning win in the first round of 2026 Wimbledon in what was also her first singles match in four years on Tuesday (June 30). Up against her was Maya Joint, who took the first set off her only to see the tennis great bounce back and win the second-set tie-break, before eventually losing with scores of 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3.

It was her first singles match since the 2022 US Open third round, where the American ace lost to Ajla Tomljanovic, after which she hung up her racket for the first time. Although Williams lost her comeback match, she once again proved that she definitely should not be taken lightly by her opponents.

The 44-year-old displayed her never-give-up mentality in the second set by saving a match point. Williams has now lost the first round of Wimbledon for the third consecutive time.

Back in 2021, she handed the walkover to Aliaksandra Sasnovich, while the following season, she suffered a three-set upset at the hands of Harmony Tan. The Frenchwoman, on the day of Williams’ comeback, revealed that the seven-time Wimbledon singles champion blocked her after their clash at SW19 in 2022 and has not yet unblocked her.

So 4 years ago after the handshake she blocked me also on Instagram btw.

Before Joint, Tan was the last player to defeat Williams at Wimbledon. Tan, 28 and ranked 200th, failed to qualify for the main draw this time.

It was back in 2022 that she made the main draw of the grass-court Major for the first time and reached the fourth round. Since then, she has failed to qualify for the main draw rounds. The last time she played a Grand Slam main draw match was at the 2022 US Open.

It was a “pinch me” moment for Maya Joint when she realized she would be facing Serena Williams in the first round of Wimbledon. After the tough match against the former World No.1, the Australian ace said the thought of facing Williams affected her a great deal.

I didn’t get much sleep last night, I was up until 2 am just thinking about it. Walking out, I forgot the warm-up, my legs weren’t moving. I really don’t know what to say right now. I don’t know what just happened.

The 20-year-old will next be locking horns with Alexandra Eala. It was the first time she played a main-draw match in the grass-court Major. Joint has produced her best Major performance when she reached the second round of the 2024 and 2025 US Open.

Apart from the Harmony Tan controversy, another decision of Williams has drawn criticism. Following her match, she decided to skip the press conference.

It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here. The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything.

Williams’ Wimbledon run is not over yet. She is competing in doubles alongside her sister, Venus Williams (they received the wild cards). They will be facing the pair of Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. The Williams sisters last won a Major doubles title at the 2022 Wimbledon.

Williams has already played two doubles matches upon her comeback. She teamed up with Victoria Mboko for the Queen’s Club Championships, and they won the match. But Mboko’s injury during her singles match forced them to withdraw. Later, Williams played doubles with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open and lost the match.
