Serena Williams at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics? Mats Wilander is convinced the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion wants to play the prestigious tournament at her home. At present, Williams is gearing up for Wimbledon, where she is set to play both singles and doubles, after being awarded the wild cards.
In doubles, Williams has paired up with her sister, Venus Williams. The 44-year-old has made it clear that she, upon her return to tennis, has nothing to prove to anyone. That she is competing solely for the purpose of enjoying.
But not many of her former colleagues are ready to buy this because she is the Serena Williams. Many believe she is playing to chase more glory in the Majors, with Wilander going even a step further, saying on TNT Sports that the former WTA World No.1 could be aiming to compete at the Olympics.
I don’t think this is just a short-term comeback. I don’t expect her to play singles at Wimbledon without then competing in the US Open. I expect her to compete in the US Open as well. I don’t think her results are that important.
Williams will be starting her singles campaign against Maya Joint on June 30. It will be her first singles match since the third round of the 2022 US Open, after which she hung up her racket for the first time. In doubles, the Williams sisters will face the pair of Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio.
She’s clearly aiming, I believe, for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. I assume that’s something really important to her. She’s obviously won a lot of gold medals in singles and doubles, and I expect her to compete in the Olympics.
Mats Wilander added
Williams will be playing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2022. She last won a title here back in 2016, and it was also at SW19 that the Williams sisters lifted their 14th Grand Slam doubles title.
Serena Williams slams the anti-doping rules
The anti-doping rules were the big reasons why Serena Williams did not want to make her comeback. Williams is a busy woman. Apart from playing tennis, she runs multiple companies and often travels to different cities. Plus, she is a mom of two daughters. Because of all of these, it’s tough for the former World No.1 to follow the anti-doping protocols.

It’s grueling. They changed the rules now. I didn’t know some of the rules. So apparently, if you miss a test outside of your window, it still counts as missed. I’m like, ‘I guess I can’t go pick up my kids.’ It’s unprofessional, I think. I hate it. I think it’s necessary, but I think a lot of this stuff, if I want to go places outside of my window, I should be able to go without having it count as a missed test.
Serena Williams said at the press conference
Williams is not the first player to complain about the anti-doping rules. Another doping scandal recently sent shockwaves across the tennis world. Czech ace Marketa Vondrousova is slapped with a four-year ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) because she refused to take the test.
The 26-year-old said seeing a stranger outside of her apartment at 8 pm scared her because she suffers a great deal from anxiety issues, which is why she signed the refusal form. But the ITIA did not accept her explanation and handed her a lengthy ban.
The ITIA also faced a lot of criticism for their verdict on Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek‘s doping scandals in 2024. The two top players escaped harsh punishment because they provided the source of contamination within the time given to them.
