Tom Brady knows a thing or two about playing the quarterback position. At least that is what his seven Super Bowls tell. He also knows the pressures of playing the position. Especially how it was when starting for the New England Patriots in his second season in the NFL.
But in today’s era, more and more rookie quarterbacks are starting, something he is not too sure of when telling Stephen A. Smith. The GOAT was speaking with the long-time analyst at the Fanatics Fest held in New York.
I went to New England, and I was developed by Coach Belichick and the offensive staff there, I didn’t start my first year. I think it’s just a tragedy that we’re forcing these rookies to play early. But the reality is the only reason they are is because we’ve dumbed the game down which has allowed them to play. We used to spend hours and hours in the offseason, in training camp, trying to be a little better the next year.Tom Brady said
Essentially suggesting that football has become easier for rookie quarterbacks. So much so, that they need not worry about learning the nuances and can play right away.
Tom Brady could be implying that quarterbacks need not understand how the system works. If they have enough ball skills and an intelligence, they can start right away. Gone are the days when they had to sit back and learn each nuance, just so that they are prepared for when their name is called.
This means, somewhere, the winningest quarterback in NFL history is suggesting that current generation players do not put the work in. Or rather are not required to, just like what is happening at his old team.
Tom Brady’s Patriots possibly starting Drake Maye adds to his narrative
Before the start of practice, the New England Patriots were clear that veteran backup Jacoby Brissett will start. That meant Drake Maye would take over whenever he was ready. But his pre-season plays have brought up the possibility of him starting from week 1.
Everyone knows the preseason is not a definitive yardstick to draw a conclusion. Even then, with the way he was throwing the ball and leading his team, fans might want him to start. That said, Tom Brady’s former teammate Jerod Mayo might be better off listening to his former running mate. Brady knows the pitfalls of the NFL as much as he knows about the success.
Letting Maye sit on the bench and soak in all the information will bode well for the long run. Otherwise, it could lead to problems which may be detrimental to the player as well as the franchise. A recently traded away quarterback should serve as a constant reminder of what can go wrong.
