A lot has changed since the last time Jacoby Brissett wore a New England Patriots jersey. He was a rookie drafted in 2016 to learn behind Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo. Eight years later, he will assume a new role as a mentor for the third overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, Drake Maye.
Even if there’s doubt about Maye’s high draft, Brissett revealed that he has been nothing but impressed by the 21-year-old. He disclosed that he will mentor the young quarterback with everything he has learned throughout his career.
Following stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Washington Commanders, the 31-year-old signed a 1-year contract to play for the Patriots. Brissett aims to be a good influence on both Maye and sixth-round pick Joe Milton III.
When people ask that about mentoring other guys, I don’t understand the bad part. [I’m a teammate first.] I hope I can be a good teammate to not only him but everyone on this team.Jacoby Brissett said after the first week of rookie camp
Brissett revealed to MassLive.com that he got acquainted with Maye right after the draft through their common friend Sam Howell (a former Washington and North Carolina QB). Maye was looking forward to learning everything he could.
Jacoby Brissett has high praise for Drake Maye
A lot of eyebrows were raised last week when Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo came out and said that Maye has a lot to learn. Analysts and football pundits deciphered that Mayo realized that perhaps he had made a mistake by taking Maye so high.
However, Brissett claimed he only sees quality in the rookie. He spoke about Maye’s arm talent, pointing out that he can make every throw in the playbook.
He's got a lot of talent... That’s what you want. Not only in your quarterback but [in] anybody on the team. I’m excited to work with him.Jacoby Brissett said

Besides being a positive influence and assuming the role of mentor, the Patriots brought Brissett back to Boston so that he could compete with Maye. Mayo hopes they don’t end up like Mac Jones and Bailly Zappe from last season.
Jacoby Brissett says he and Bailey Zappe have been competing every day and that him, Zappe, Drake Maye, and Joe Milton all believe they can win the starting job.

The one-time Super Bowl winner, however, assured that he has no ego working in his mind. He wants to do the job Mayo tells him to do, whether it’s to be the starter or the backup. Brissett has played 48 games in his NFL career, recording 10,574 yards, 51 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions, along with 230 passing yards for 915 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns.
