Chinese shuttler He Bingjiao made a heartfelt gesture to former Olympic medalist, Carolina Marin, after winning the silver medal in the badminton women’s single event at the Paris Olympics. Marin, who was her counterpart in the semi-finals, had to pull out after an unexpected injury that forced her to draw curtains on the race.

Marin broke down in tears as she was compelled to make a decision which propelled Bingjiao to the finale. She was pitted against South Korea’s An Se-young, and after a decent battle, it was the latter who emerged victorious to clinch gold.

While claiming her medal on the podium, Bingjiao held a pin of the Spanish flag in a nod to Carolina Marin after her unexpected crashing from the tournament.

Carolina Marin had an early lead as she won the first set against He Bingjiao and was just 11 points away from securing the victory to propel her to the summit clash. Unfortunately, a wrong landing on her previously injured knee caused her to contort in agony.

She did head back to the bench, got the brace on, and fought for another couple of points, which were clinched by Bingjiao. While still in the hunt for that all-important break, she realized her Olympic dream was over as she struggled to continue.

A glance at Carolina Marin’s journey in the Paris Olympics

Marin, who bagged the gold in the 2016 Rio Games, drubbing Indian superstar, PV Sindhu, started the latest edition of the Olympics on a high. She kicked-off her group stages with a 21-11, 21-19 victory over Jenjira Stadelmann, while following that up with a win against Ireland’s Rachel Darragh, smashing her way to the finishing line by a staggering margin of 21-5, 21-5.

In the pre quarterfinals, she emerged victorious at the expense of USA’s Beiwen Zhang while she ousted Aya Ohori in the quarterfinals by 21-13 and 21-14. Marin had an unfortunate ACL injury in 2019 that forced her out of action for a while, which happened during the Indonesia Masters final against Saina Nehwal. It was the same knee that bothered her after an untoward landing against He Bingjiao in the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics.
