“He could have won all three big finals in 2020” Wolfgang discloses why Dominic Thiem doesn’t need ‘great changes’ anymore
The U.S Open 2020 champion, Dominic Thiem’s father shed light on his son’s achievements in tennis. Wolfgang Thiem highlighted that the latest season was proof of his Dominic’s excellence. The incredible lieu of results which the Austrian has garnered this year is close to “the finished package.”
Thiem reached his first hard-court Grand Slam final at the Australian Open. However, he lost against Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Then, the 27-year-old advanced to the U.S Open final as well. However, this time, he vanquished Alexander Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(6). With this win, Thiem claimed his maiden Major title. In addition, he finished as the runner-up for a second consecutive time at the Nitto ATP Finals. The World No.4, Daniil Medvedev ousted the Austrian 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Citing these astounding achievements, Wolfgang seemed satisfied with his son’s year.
Wolfgang’s take on Dominic’s results and decision to compete at the Tokyo Olympics
In an interview with Sky Sport, Wolfgang Thiem stated how Dominic could’ve won or lost the three aforementioned matches. The battles which Domi lost came down to either a fifth set or a tie-break. The 27-year-old was incredibly close to defeating both, Nole and Medvedev. “He (Dominic) could have won or lost all three (finals). It is so close together,” Wolfgang said.
Further, he added, “He is now 27. Now you have to make sure that you cherish and look after the package.”
Wolfgang also expressed his bewilderment over Dominic’s decision to compete at the Tokyo Olympics 2021. “It surprised me. But it may well be that with the Grand Slam victory, he (Dominic) is now a little freer,” he concluded.
