Legendary Mithali Raj is one of the faces of Indian women cricket. She helped the team to gain the recognition that it enjoys today. Recently, she called it quits to the international cricket from all formats and soon a biopic was on the way to be released. The movie ‘Shabaash Mithu’ has been released today in the theaters which starrs Tapsee Pannu.
Directed by Srijit Mukherjee, the movie shows the journey of Mithali from an eight-year-old kid to becoming a cricket legend. Mithali’s career spans 23 years and has appeared in four World Cups. Not only that, she is also the leading run-scorer in women’s international cricket. She scored 7805 runs in 232 ODI matches, which is the highest in women’s cricket. Her tally of 2364 runs in women’s T20Is is also the highest for India.
At the age of 16, she made her debut in ODI cricket in 1999 and scored a century. This made her the youngest centurion in women’s internationals. Ireland’s Amy Hunter broke her record on her 16th birthday in 2021. Mithali, along with her former teammate Jhulan Goswami, is one of the only two players to have played more than 200 ODIs. She tops the list with 232 ODI matches. Her double century score of 214 is the second-highest individual score in women’s Tests.
Well, the numbers will show what a legendary player she is, but greatness comes from sheer hardwork, dedication, sacrifice and what not. Shabash Mithu is made to show that part of her life. You should watch it to know the struggles behind the achievements in women’s cricket.
Twitter has mixed reactions to the movie. A section of Twitterverse feels Shabaash Mithu did complete justice to Mithali, but some feels it lacked a lot of things.
