Mumbai City FC thrashed ATK Mohun Bagan 2-0 in the final league stage game of the season at the Sunday Showdown. With this victory, the islanders finished top of the Indian Super League table, sealing the League Winners shield and a slot in the AFC Champions League for the upcoming season. Mumbai City FC are only the second team from India to achieve this extraordinary feat.


The fight to the top started with an early goal. In the 7th minute, Mourtada Falls headed the ball at the back of the net from a set-piece delivered beautifully by Ahmed Jahouh.

ATK Mohun Bagan went all guns blazing after conceding early in the game. But, this was in vain. ATKMB only needed a draw to secure the top spot, but failed to hold their defensive shape, especially in the first half against wave after wave of Mumbai attack.

The second goal came in the 39th minute when Bartholomew Ogbeche doubled their lead. Hernan Santana’s curling free-kick hits the crossbar and comes back but Ogbeche heads the rebound ball into the net.

Substitute, Prabhir Das’ effort was denied after the ball rattled the crossbar around the half hour mark. In the closing stages of the game Bagan put everything they had in their firepower; but Mumbai’s defence stood firm as it has been so since so many years.

Lobera had come agonisingly close to win his maiden title last season with FC Goa only to part ways with the club just three matches before the league stage ended. Goa eventually won the League Winners Shield title but it was interim coach Clifford Miranda whose name got associated with the trophy in the history books.

Except for a few matches in between, Mumbai City were more or less the most dominant side in the league and it was only fair that the title of the champions of the league stage went to them. They will face 4th in the table, Goa FC, and maybe then can Sergio Lobera have his revenge. ATKMB will lock horns with 3rd place North East United FC.
