This past Sunday, Donald Trump found himself under backlash for a joke he made regarding the U.S. women’s hockey team after the men’s team won the gold medal. A few days after this, the women’s team captain Hilary Knight, blasted the President and called his joke “distasteful.“
Last week, the USA women’s team first defeated Canada. In a matchup between the two North American countries, the United States came out on top as 2-1 winners in overtime.
They found themselves 1-0 down in the second period through Kristin O’Neill. With around 2 minutes remaining for the end of the game, the U.S. pulled back through Knight.
The captain scored her 15th goal in the Olympic Games and recorded her 33rd point to tie up the proceedings at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.

In the 3-on-3 overtime period, Megan Keller would then steal the spotlights. The U.S. No.5 would skate past the Canadian defense and score the golden goal to clinch a 2-1 overtime win.

This win marked the 3rd Olympic gold medal for Team USA in women’s ice hockey. They also ended up avenging their 2022 loss against Canada in the Beijing Games.
Following this victory of theirs, the men’s team would follow in their footsteps. Jack Hughes would end up scoring the golden goal in overtime to claim a famous 2-1 win and capture their 3rd gold medal in men’s ice hockey as well.

Following their victory, Donald Trump would call them. During the celebrations inside the dressing room, the 79-year-old would congratulate the men’s team for their victory and extend them an invitation to the White House.
It was during this where he would make a joke regarding the women’s team. He would claim that he will have to invite the women’s team as well, or he might get impeached.
I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the woman’s team. You do know that? I do believe I probably would be impeached.

Hilary Knight would respond to this on Wednesday. While speaking with SportsCenter, she would call these comments from Trump “distasteful” and claim that they were overshadowing their success.
I thought it was sort of a distasteful joke, and unfortunately that is overshadowing a lot of the success… It was unfortunate.

The women’s team would also decline an invitation to the White House. They would politely turn this opportunity down while citing logistics and scheduling concerns.
Jeremy Swayman extends support to Hilary Knight and women’s team, claims they needed to react better
Hilary Knight and the U.S. women’s hockey team were not pleased with the impeachment joke made by Donald Trump. On Wednesday, U.S. goaltender Jeremy Swayman extended support to Knight and claimed that the team should have reacted better in that situation.

After Trump made the joke, there were some awkward laughs in the locker room. While speaking with the reporters in Boston, Swayman expressed that they have huge respect for the women’s team.
We should’ve reacted differently. We’re so excited for the Women’s team and have so much respect for the Women’s team.

Hilary Knight did acknowledge that there was respect between the women’s and the men’s time. She admitted that it was a “shame” that these two historic storylines were getting overshadowed by some comments from Trump.
Speaking of Knight, the 36-year-old finished the campaign with 6 points (3 goals and 3 assists) in 7 games. Her 33 points in the Olympic Games make her the highest point scorer for Team USA in both men’s and women’s history.
