Jannik Sinner was suffering from heat and other problems during his fourth-round match at the 2025 Australian Open against 13th seed Holger Rune. He even took an 11-minute medical timeout following which he finished the match in his favor with a scoreline of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In the third set, Sinner, who was spotted shaking on the bench, could play no more without asking for a medical timeout during which he was off the court and was receiving treatment inside the locker room. Rune had the momentum on his side, for he won the second set.

When Sinner returned, he claimed the third set and quickly finished the fourth to secure a berth in the quarterfinals. The 21-year-old Rune has now reacted to Sinner’s 11-minute timeout.

I don’t know why it took so long. The doctors came to check him on the court and the referee said they needed to do some more checks to make sure he was OK. Then he came back on the court really wild, so I don’t know what they did to him. I could see he was struggling.

Holger Rune said at the press conference

Rune, who was aiming to reach the quarterfinals at the Australian Open for the first time, admitted that the hot and humid conditions at Melbourne Park were also troubling him.

Especially after I had a 10, 12-minute break, I was sitting in the heat, I was cooking. You have to move on and maybe be smarter next time to, I don’t know, wait off the court or something.

Holger Rune added

With his recent win, the World No.1 has improved his head-to-head record over the Dane to 3-2. He is now set to lock horns with Alex de Minaur in his third straight Australian Open quarterfinals.

Jannik Sinner versus Alex de Minaur head-to-head record

Jannik Sinner will enter the quarterfinal match against Alex de Minaur as a heavy favorite to win. The defending champion has met the Aussie nine times, and has never seen defeat.

De Minaur, before setting up the clash with the two-time Grand Slam champion, got the better of 20-year-old American Alex Michelsen in straight sets in the fourth round. Except for his match against Francisco Cerundolo, the local man has won all his matches in straight sets.

The 25-year-old is aiming to progress to the semifinal of a Grand Slam event for the first time. He has, however, made it to the last eight stages in every Grand Slam tournament.
