Holger Rune’s mother has strongly criticized the ATP Tour after her son suffered a significant injury at the Stockholm Open. The Danish player was forced to retire from his semi-final match against Ugo Humbert despite being a set ahead. It was later confirmed that Rune had completely torn his Achilles tendon.
The world No. 10 now faces a long recovery period, expected to be between six months and a year. His mother, Aneke, explained that Rune doesn’t need to worry too much about money from the ATP bonus pool, as his financial situation is stable. However, she emphasized that the same cannot be said for many other players who depend on these earnings.
Aneke Rune labeled the ATP’s system “unreasonable” and “unacceptable,” adding that such strict penalties and expectations place unfair pressure on players lower down the rankings. Rune said on Danish media outlet B.T:
Holger is facing a long period without income. Fortunately, he has done well over the years and managed his finances well thanks to his good savings, so he is not struggling. But not all players are in the top 10 in the world, and many may not have similar savings. Therefore, drastic reductions in their bonuses mean a lot. I think the ATP can adapt to this immediately
Aneke was present in Stockholm when the injury occurred and voiced her frustration over the demanding ATP schedule. She described the tour’s rules and player requirements as “impossible” to meet throughout the year.
Holger Rune updates on surgery
Danish star Holger Rune has successfully undergone surgery after rupturing his Achilles tendon during his semifinal match in Stockholm. The serious injury has ruled him out for the remainder of the 2025 season, forcing the Dane into a lengthy recovery period.

He stated on Instagram:
Hi everyone. Surgery went really well today. Thank you for all your incredible messages and support. I will keep you updated on my recovery. But now rest and heal.
The surgery took place in Copenhagen, and Rune confirmed in a press release that the procedure went well. He expressed determination to work hard during rehabilitation and make a strong comeback to the sport. The World No. 11 also shared a photo from his hospital bed, assuring fans of his positive mindset.
Rune entered what turned out to be his final tournament of the year as the top seed. He reached the semifinals after straight-set and comeback wins over Márton Fucsovics and Tomás Martín Etcheverry, respectively. Facing Ugo Humbert in the last four, Rune won the first set 6-4 but was forced to retire at 2-2 in the second due to the injury.
The former World No. 4 competed in 58 matches during the 2025 season, winning 36. His only title came at the Barcelona Open, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Rune also reached the Indian Wells final, producing impressive wins over top players before falling to Jack Draper.
Holger Rune’s status compared to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz
Young tennis sensation Holger Rune’s 2025 season ended abruptly after he ruptured his Achilles tendon during the Stockholm Open semifinals. The Dane underwent successful surgery in Copenhagen but now faces months of recovery, putting his promising rise on hold.

While Rune has shown flashes of brilliance, he has fallen behind his generational rivals, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The duo has dominated men’s tennis, winning the last eight Grand Slams between them — Sinner owning four and Alcaraz six — along with a combined 12 Masters 1000 titles. Sinner has also added an ATP Finals crown and two Davis Cup wins.
Rune’s biggest achievement remains his 2022 Paris Masters title, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. Since then, he has struggled to match the consistency and success of his peers.
Despite the setback, Rune’s talent and determination still make him a future contender. If he recovers fully, he could yet rejoin the race with Sinner and Alcaraz for tennis supremacy.
