Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards agree Russell Westbrook – John Wall trade

The Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards have agreed on a blockbuster swap deal for Russell Westbrook and John Wall, which both these players have been wanting for a long time. The Wizards would be sending Wall along with a lottery-protected 2023 first-round NBA Draft pick to the Rockets for Westbrook. Westbrook and Wizards coach Scott Brooks have a long history, spending seven years as player and coach together in Oklahoma City.
The 2023 first-round pick is lottery protected for the Wizards. If it doesn’t convey in that year, it has a succession of protections that include picks Nos. 1-12 in 2024, picks 1-10 in 2025 and picks 1-8 in 2026, sources said. If it hasn’t conveyed as a first-round pick to Houston by 2026, it becomes a second-round pick in each of 2026 and 2027, as per ESPN.
Westbrook and Wall finally get their long-wished trade
Russell Westbrook will get the chance to reunite with head coach Scott Brooks after an unfruitful season with Houston Rockets. John Wall gets the opportunity for a fresh start as he moves on after spending a decade with the Washington Wizards.
The deal doesn’t change much financially for Houston Rockets or Washington Wizards considering that both Westbrook and Wall are on supermax deals. It does help the Rockets replenish their draft capital a bit though, the same that they spent on acquiring Westbrook in the first-place last season.
However, Wall hasn’t played a game since December 2018 and there’s little guarantee as to what he’ll conjure when he does eventually take to the courts.
Having said that, it also needs to be seen whether Wall can co-exist with James Harden because this would be the first instance of him not being the primary ball-handler on the team in many years.
