Aryna Sabalenka creates history at the Wuhan Open
World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka made history by winning her third consecutive title at the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open. She defeated No. 7 Qinwen Zheng 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the final.
Sabalenka, who also won the tournament in 2018 and 2019, became the first woman to claim three straight titles in Wuhan, maintaining an impressive 17-0 record at the event. This is her 17th Hologic WTA Tour title and her fifth victory on Chinese soil, the most by any player in the Open Era.
This win in Wuhan marks Sabalenka’s fourth title of the year. It is the first time she has captured multiple WTA 1000 titles in a single season. Earlier in 2024, she claimed her sixth career WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open.
Zheng will rise to No. 7 in the PIF Race to the WTA Finals following her strong performance. She is aiming to become the first Chinese player to qualify for the WTA Finals since Li Na in 2013. Sabalenka’s victory also extended her streak of Top 10 wins to six, tying her with World No. 1 Iga Swiatek for the most Top 10 wins this season, with each achieving nine.
This match was a rematch of the season’s first Grand Slam final. Although Sabalenka improved her record to 4-0 against Zheng, this meeting was more competitive than their previous encounters. The Olympic gold medalist showed significant progress in closing the gap between them.
