Hubert Hurkacz is one of the few active players who has played against the Big 4 (Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray), and he’s currently competing against the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The Polish star recently shed light upon the difference between the two generations of players.
Djokovic, Federer, Murray, and Nadal dominated the men’s circuit for over fifteen years. They claimed 69 Grand Slams combined, going hammer and tongs at each other. Djokovic is the only player among them who’s yet to retire.
Also, Djokovic is the only player Hurkacz has not beaten. They have met eight times on the court, but the Serbian legend has always found a way to triumph over the Polish star. He holds a 1-1 head-to-head record against Federer, winning their last meeting at the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals, while leading Nadal 1-0 in their record.
He also leads Murray 2-1 in their head-to-head meetings having won their first two encounters before the British legend won their last clash. On the other hand, he has also met Sinner and Alcaraz a couple of times on tour. Against the former, Hurkacz holds a 2-3 head-to-head record, while he’s yet to beat Alcaraz after four meetings.
During an interview with Tennis365, he reacted to John McEnroe’s statement that Alcaraz and Sinner can beat Nadal in his prime. The 28-year-old revealed that it is difficult to say who will win the tie, but he’s sure that the pair have raised the bar in the men’s circuit and are currently playing at an incredible level:
I feel like the level is growing every single year, and obviously, we can say the level is better than it was ten years ago, but that is not to say Roger, Rafa, Novak, and Andy could not get to where we are now. They also improved every year and raised the bar, so if they were playing now, they would still be improving. What we can say is Jannik and Carlos are playing at an incredible level now and it is up to the rest of us to work hard to keep up with them.
Hurkacz’s last meeting against Djokovic came at the Geneva Open final. The Polish star won the first set, but the 38-year-old came from behind to beat the former World No.6 and claim his 100th tour-level title of his career.
Hubert Hurkacz says he still remains ambitious despite his struggles with injuries
Hubert Hurkacz has struggled on the court since sustaining a right knee injury at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The World No.41 slipped on the court and has never been the same after that. In June, he underwent arthroscopic surgery on the knee, which forced him to withdraw from the Terra Wortmann Open and Wimbledon Championship.

He’s currently 7,000 points behind Carlos Alcaraz, who’s the World No.2, and 9,000 points behind Jannik Sinner. During the aforementioned interview, he revealed that he still has an ambition to win the four Grand Slams despite his struggles:
It has not been an easy year for me, but my ambition is still big. I still have the ambition to win all the Grand Slams. There is no secret about that. You will always have difficult moments in your life, but I am not even close to reaching my full potential. I believe I can be so much better.
Hurkacz is yet to reveal a possible comeback date. However, he’s expected to be back before the US Open. He may not compete in any warm-up tournament before the Flushing Meadows as he aims to recover properly before returning to the court.
