“I know that’s NOT the head coach” – Aaron Donald looks back on his first meeting with head coach Sean McVay

Aaron Donald is considered by many to be the greatest defensive player in the NFL. He was the centerpiece to the Rams’ victory in Super Bowl LVI. The 30-year old defensive tackle made the game-winning tackles that helped Los Angeles win the Super Bowl.

However, Donald is not the only one who deserves the credit for their Super Bowl victory. Sean McVay entered the organization and created a team that will be a Super Bowl contender for years to come. His hunger to win games along with his ability to connect with the players has created an environment where players can develop themselves.

“It’s been a blessing to have him” – Aaron Donald grateful to play under Sean McVay

Sean McVay became the youngest head coach in modern NFL history when he was hired by the Rams in 2017 at the age of 30. In his first year itself, McVay rebuilt the Rams’ offense which was the league’s lowest scoring offense the previous year into the top-scoring team of 2017 on their way to the division title.

The Rams fired then head coach Jeff Fisher after their first season back in L.A. A few days after the season ended, Rams executives asked Aaron Donald to meet them at the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey. They were interviewing a new coach, Sean McVay and they wanted Donald to meet him and give some input.

“I remember walking into the room and they said, ‘We’re gonna hire this guy. We want you to talk to him. Let us know what you think,’ “ Donald said as he remembered meeting McVay for the first time. “I’m looking around, I see this young coach just sitting there. I’m like, I know that’s not the head coach they’re about to get, is it? “It ended up being an amazing hire. It’s been a blessing to have him as my head coach and build the bond with him.”

Needless to say, Sean McVay has been the best buy for the Rams. Division title in year one, Super Bowl loss in year three, second Super Bowl shot in year five, McVay’s resume has been extraordinary for a guy his age. Hope he continues the trend and sets up the Rams dynasty just like Bill Belichick and Tom Brady did in New England.
