“I love a clapback, it’s so fun” Venus Williams shares her mantra to deal with criticism in the contemporary world
Venus Williams
In a recent interview, American professional tennis player Venus Williams opened up about her innings post her sister Serena Williams’ retirement and even shared her own tried and tested mantra to deal with criticism and “clapbacks”. As per the tennis star herself, she actually enjoys clapbacks and criticism as it gives her a sense of motivation and also because she is too “busy” for all the drama.
The interview also touched down on multiple different aspects of her life, ranging from personal life, relationship status, beauty standards, and, of course, plans regarding her retirement. The one topic that has been making rounds on the internet for the longest time following Serena Williams’s retirement.
Venus Williams revealed how happy clap backs make her. She noted:
“I love a clapback, it’s so fun. I don’t even see it as offensive, I just see it as let’s just shut this down. My mom, Oracene, did not allow microaggressions in the home. I have a very short fuse for it. So, yeah, no, I’m not the one! But I see other people dealing with it. I have no part of it. No drama for me, I can’t. I’m too busy for drama. Some people like drama and that’s their choice. With my friends, I give them maybe one piece of advice, and then people know. You don’t have to beg anyone. I’m not in a begging business. I’m a real chill girl, so your choice.” Venus was quite vocal about it.
Venus Williams talked at length about her relationship status.
“I’ve had a single life for a long time and I think it’s really easy to get stuck in a single life and sometimes – at least for me – harder to get out of a single life. So, that’s probably something I’m working on now and it makes you think about yourself and what you want and how to behave. It’s definitely a lot of self-thought that goes into it. And I guess for other people they are running to a relationship, which has never been my thing. So, we’re all different. This is how I work and function, and I’m OK with it.” Venus noted.
Continuing her train of thought, she further added, “When life changes, you’ve got to know when to change. You can’t hold on to either a relationship or singleness. You have to be able to move at the time– and even if you don’t want to or aren’t ready, you’ve just got to go with it.”
What Venus Williams is planning to do next?
While Venus Williams is an outstanding tennis player, she has also got many side businesses and investments. She is still playing around, swinging her racket like the good old days, but since Serena Williams’s retirement, it would be interesting to know when she decides to hang up her boots.
Her form, too, in recent times, has not been great. She could not participate in any of the First three Grand Slams this year as she could not qualify for them. She made a wildcard entry at the US Open. Here too, she gave a dismal performance and exited the tournament in the first round itself. She has also dropped out of the WTA Top 100 rankings.
