Speaking on a Serbian motivational show, world no. 1 Novak Djokovic had his words to say regarding the importance of motivating children from very early on. He encouraged them to dream big, and that it proves to be the catalyst to their progress.

The Serb also talked about how having the right attitude is necessary to get through the hurdles in life, stating his never-say-die attitude as the reason he has made comebacks after falling down on multiple occasions during his career.

Novak Djokovic used to lift cardboard trophies in his childhood

Djokovic stressed on why kids need to be motivated from early on in their childhood, sharing a tidbit that he used to find joy in lifting makeshift trophies made of cardboard, treating it as a stepping stone to his current position as the World No. 1.

He said, “I think that every child, whatever he wants to become, should always dream, imagine. It helps move them towards the realization of those dreams. I had improvised trophies made of cardboard, plastic. I lifted those trophies, that brought me where I am today.”

Adding on the need for the right attitude in a person’s mind, he said, “When you think that the ship is sinking, that there is no way out, I somehow find a way to return,” referring to his never-quit mindset.

Djokovic is known to be a resilient player, producing comebacks from the lowest points of his career, and even combatting the odds in matches. A stellar example of this came in the final of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, where Roger Federer had 2 match points on his serve in the deciding set. Djokovic then produced a stunning break and went on to win the championship.

Djokovic believes that anyone, irrespective of position, can make their voice heard and represent Serbia internationally.

He said, “I believe that Serbia can offer a lot. People need to understand that you do not need to be a successful person to make your voice heard. Everyone should do as much as they can and what their capabilities are at the moment.”

With a stunning 37-2 record and five titles this year, Djokovic is set to finish his season with two events – at the Vienna Open, an event that 7 of the top 10 players will be attending, and the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals.
