Recently, Rohit was chosen for the prestigious Khel Ratna award, creating a lot of buzz on social media. Indian batting great Sunil Gavaskar said that he wanted to bat like Rohit Sharma but lacked confidence. Gavaskar was the first batsman to score 10,00 runs in Test cricket.
The 71-year-old batting legend spoke to India Today and said, “The way you see a Rohit Sharma opening the batting in one-day, test cricket, smashing from the first over. This is what I wanted to play. Circumstances and of course the lack of confidence in my ability did not allow me to do that.”
Rohit Sharma has been among the handful of players to score a century in all the formats of the game. India’s limited over vice-captain has scored 9115 runs in ODIs, courtesy of 29 centuries. Whereas 2773 in T20’s. But has not enjoyed much success in the longest format of the game, given that he is not included in the squad on a regular basis.
However, he smashed 529 runs in the last test series against South Africa at home.
Gavaskar applauds current generation cricketers
He said that circumstances too did not support him to play as freely as he wanted. Gavaskar then went onto praise the current players as he felt that the way they play, possess a sense of progress, which allows to set the bar higher for the next generation.
“I love watching the next generation because there you see progress. You see how they are setting the bar higher for the next generation,” Gavaskar said during the interview.
