“I was asking ‘Boom’ about his yorkers” – James Pattinson recalls picking Jasprit Bumrah’s brains during maiden IPL stint

A stroke of luck saw Australia quick James Pattinson play his first Indian Premier League (IPL) season. After going unsold at the auction, Mumbai Indians picked up Pattinson as a last-minute replacement for veteran Lasith Malinga. And not only was he included in the squad but went on to play 10 games for the three-time champions scalping 11 wickets.
The Victoria quick is very happy about the IPL stint with MI. Pattinson admits that everything happened too quickly but adds that it was a great experience too. He went on to lift the IPL trophy in his maiden season as MI lifted their record fifth title.
“I lucked out a bit going to Mumbai, the most successful franchise in IPL history. It all happened so quickly. It was such a great experience and surprise,” Pattinson was quoted as saying by Australian Associated Press.
How does he do that!

Pattinson shares he went prying about Jasprit Bumrah‘s yorkers during the IPL. Bumrah is renowned for his accurate yorkers and subtle variations. And Pattinson was curious how he was so accurate. The 30-year-old was left amazed as he watched Bumrah bowl up close.
“‘Boom’ is one of the best, if not the best, T20 bowler in the world. I picked his brain. I was asking about his yorkers and how he gets them so good; he likes to bowl from a higher position and a few other things. You watch him bowl and just think ‘how does he do that!?’,” Pattinson said.
The Aussie described his Indian counterpart as a “fantastic guy.” Pattinson hails his unusual action for the success he has enjoyed so far and is amazed by how much he bowls in the nets. He goes on to share that Bumrah was happy to share his bowling mindset and approach with him. And he is glad to have had been picked up by the franchise.
“It’s fantastic. He’s got an unusual action, been allowed to keep doing that and it’s what makes him successful. He’s a fantastic guy, was happy to share a lot of information around his bowling mindset. He bowls a lot more than I thought he would at training. He just bowls and bowls and bowls … you see how switched on he is.“
Despite his IPL and domestic exploits, Pattinson is often left on the bench given Australia’s lethal pace battery. He has become a Test specialist for Australia but shares that IPL “ignited a spark to play more white-ball cricket, to try and get back into Australia’s white-ball teams.“
