ICC Test Rankings: Rishabh Pant climbs to career-best 7th spot; Ravichandran Ashwin moves to second
Following the recently concluded test series between India and England, hosts and winners India and its players have made significant gains in the ICC Test Rankings. The biggest gainer is Rishabh Pant who had a terrific series as he was consistently among the runs in the first three tests before capping it all off with a century in the fourth test that not only rescued India from a precarious position but also set them on their way to an innings victory.
Washington Sundar who put on an excellent partnership with Pant en route to his knock of 96* also made significant gains in the batsmen’s ranking to move to 62nd. The other Indian batters did not make huge gains due to their largely below-par performances. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli dropped points due to their fairly ordinary performances by their standards in the series.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel gain points
India’s spin twins Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin who spun a web around the English batters by picking up 27 and 32 wickets respectively in the series made huge gains unsurprisingly. Ashwin moved to the second spot in the bowlers’ rankings leapfrogging Neil Wagner who has now been pushed to 3rd. Axar made his way to the 30th spot upon gaining 552 ranking points in the series.
Meanwhile for England, James Anderson who even at 38 and in the sweltering heat of India bowled his heart out and held his own on occasions, moved to the 4th spot from 6th. Dan Lawrence who struck a fifty in the fourth test entered the top 100 and is placed at the 93rd position.
