Both Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz lifted the Cincinnati Masters title for the first time in their respective careers. Swiatek beat Jasmine Paolini in straight sets, but Alcaraz received a walkover from arch-rival Jannik Sinner as the first seed was ill.
Following the final, Sinner said he needed a couple of days to recover, which only suggests he will not be playing the mixed doubles along with former doubles No.1 Katerina Siniakova. Sinner’s compatriot Paolini has already announced her withdrawal, so Lorenzo Musetti will be playing with Caty McNally.
But Alcaraz and Swiatek will. Right after their win in Cincinnati, they wasted no time in heading toward New York, sharing the same plane.
Hello Cincinnati, I guess I want to say thank you for your support.

He was the finalist in Cincinnati in 2023 (lost the match to Novak Djokovic). But Swiatek had never played the final before this season. She was a semifinalist in 2023 and 2024, losing both matches to eventual champions Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka, respectively.
Yeah, it’s been amazing two weeks. So, really enjoyed it and finished it with the trophy. So it’s a dream come true. See you next year!

At the US Open, Swiatek was the champion in 2022 (beat Ons Jabeur). But last year, she failed to progress beyond the quarterfinals, losing the match in straight sets to eventual runner-up Jessica Pegula.
For Alcaraz, the Cincinnati Masters was his sixth title of the season, while for the six-time Grand Slam champion, it was her second title of the season after victory in the Wimbledon final over Amanda Anisimova.
Alcaraz failed to defend his Wimbledon title due to his four-set defeat to Sinner, who now trails 5-9 in the head-to-head matchups against the five-time Grand Slam champion. Had Sinner won, he would have become the first man since Roger Federer (2014-2015) to defend the Cincinnati Masters. Sinner has yet to defend a Masters 1000 title.
Carlos Alcaraz on his emotions for the US Open
Carlos Alcaraz will be playing the tournament where he lifted his career’s first Grand Slam title. In the 2022 US Open final, he beat Casper Ruud and went on to win four more Majors, the latest of which came this year, at the French Open after tough five sets against Jannik Sinner.

The 24-year-old then took revenge on his defeat with a four-set win in the Wimbledon final. At the press conference after his Cincinnati Masters win, Alcaraz was asked to talk about his emotions heading to the US Open.
Well, it’s kind of different because I’ve been playing much, much, much matches before every Grand Slams. So, I’m just going to treat it or approach it in a different way, because I am feeling different right now. I’m feeling a lot of…with a lot of confidence playing in a different surface. So, let’s see, New York is a place that I love playing. I know it is where I got my first Slam, which I just appreciate the love and the support that I received there every year that I go.
Alcaraz and Sinner will only lock horns with each other if they both progress to the final, as they will be the second and first seeds, respectively. Alcaraz and Sinner will only lock horns with each other if they both progress to the final, as they will be the second and first seeds, respectively.
Last year, Sinner beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets to win his career’s second Major. He could lose his No.1 spot to Alcaraz if he fails to defend the rest of the titles that he won last year. At the US Open last year, the Murcia native suffered a shocking second-round exit.
