The only time Iga Swiatek found herself in a tight spot was when she faced four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. After battling past her, Swiatek complained about the French crowd for disturbing her with their screams during rallies.

However, following her fourth Roland Garros win over 12th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday (June 8) in an hour and eight minutes, the World No.1 expressed how grateful she was when the crowd cheered for her, which uplifted her spirits after narrowly escaping defeat in that second round.

Merci beaucoup. I was almost out of the tournament in the 2nd round. Thank you for staying behind me and cheering for me. I needed to believe it would be possible for me. It was an emotional tournament. Thank you for supporting me.

Swiatek is now a five-time Grand Slam champion and has won her three Roland Garros titles on the trot. She became the first player since Serena Williams (2013) to win titles on clay in Madrid, Rome, and Paris. Swiatek has now joined the likes of Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis with five Grand Slam titles.

Iga Swiatek feels she’s a better player than last year

Iga Swiatek kick-started her campaign this season at the Australian Open and won her first title in Qatar. Then, after clinching the Indian Wells Masters, Swiatek completed the treble, winning the Madrid Open, the Italian Open, and the French Open. After winning the French Open final, when asked about her Roland Garros goal, Swiatek revealed her goal is to improve herself each day.

No, no. I have already achieved much more than I ever expected and always set my goals. I’m just doing everything step by step and enjoying every match and every title. My goal is to be a better player. And I feel like I’m a better player than last year. I’m proud of that.

Swiatek now leads the list among active players with the most Grand Slam titles, though Venus Williams should be on the top with seven titles, but she does not make regular appearances on the WTA Tour.

With this win, the 23-year-old, who won her first title on the surface in 2020, broke several records. She became the youngest player to win in Paris four times, surpassing Justine Henin. The win-loss record of 35-2 only proves how dominating she is on Roland Garros surface.
