Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek is back in the Madrid Open semifinals after a hard-fought win over Madison Keys. However, the highlights weren’t just on the court — they also came during her post-match press conference.
The World No. 2 was asked about the similarities between the ATP and WTA tours in terms of openness. Swiatek quickly shut down the question and refused to comment on it.
What do you mean? I’m not stupid enough to answer that question.
Iga Swiatek said in her post-match press conference at the Madrid Open
The reporter’s intention was to highlight the variety of champions on the ATP tour today compared to previous years, which were dominated by the Big 3. However, the reality is that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have been dominating the ATP tour, as they currently hold all four Grand Slam titles and the ATP Finals.

“People say the ATP Tour is becoming more & more like the WTA Tour. I think they mean it in a negative way.. what do you think?”

This year, Sinner started by winning the Australian Open. Alcaraz may not have had a great start to the season, but he already has a Masters 1000 title from Monte Carlo.
Iga Swiatek sets No.2 ranking clash with Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek will meet again in the Madrid Open semi-finals. Swiatek reached the last four after a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Madison Keys. Gauff also advanced with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Mirra Andreeva. This will be their 15th match against each other.

Swiatek leads their head-to-head 11-3. But Gauff has won their last two meetings. She beat Swiatek at the 2024 WTA Finals and the United Cup in January. The American will try to keep that streak going. Swiatek wants to take back control in their rivalry. She is aiming for her third Madrid Open final in a row. As the defending champion, she also hopes to keep her ranking strong.
Rankings are important in this match. Swiatek had 1,000 points to defend. Gauff had fewer to lose and has now gained 270 points. Pegula lost early and will not pass Swiatek. Gauff also can’t pass her now after Swiatek’s latest win.
Iga Swiatek makes 40-year old history after making Madrid Open semifinals
Polish star Iga Swiatek pulled off a big comeback at the 2025 Madrid Open. She lost the first set 0-6 to Madison Keys but came back strong. Swiatek won the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals. She is the defending champion at this WTA 1000 event.

Madison Keys played an amazing first set. She gave away only nine points. This was the first time since 2019 that Swiatek got bageled on clay. Keys is ranked No. 5 and is the current Australian Open winner.
Swiatek did something very rare. She became only the second player in 40 years to beat a top-five opponent after losing a set 0-6 on clay. The only other player to do this was Steffi Graf at the 1992 French Open.
Swiatek now has one of the best records against top 10 players. Her win over Keys makes her record 49 wins and 20 losses. This gives her a win rate of 71%. It is better than Serena Williams. Only Steffi Graf has a higher percentage at 75%.
