With Jeremy Swayman’s contract signed and sealed the spotlight now falls on New York Rangers Igor Shesterkin. The Russian goalie is yet to sign an extension with the team, and he has reportedly rejected an 8-year $88 million contract from the team.
This contract would’ve made him the highest goaltender in the National Hockey League, but as per reports, Shesterkin has asked for a $12 million deal. He is undoubtedly one of the top goaltenders in the NHL, which makes it all the more crucial for the Rangers to lock him in.

On the other hand, many are speculating how the Rangers can offer him $12 million considering they are all ready to sign a deal of $11 million. Igor Shesterkin mentioned he wants this deal either done before the 2024-25 season game starts or after it ends.
It’s work for my agent. I just want to be focused on my game and on practice every day.
Igor Shesterkin as per Mollie Walker of NY Post.
He does not want any distractions during the regular season games. This gives even less time for the Rangers, as the games will start very soon. The NY Rangers are scheduled to play against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
According to the organization’s suggested $88 million deal, Shesterkin will get an AAV of $11 million. So far, Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price is the highest-paid in the NHL with an AAV of $10.5 million.
I love the organization. I love the team. I love the fans. So, of course, it would be great to stay here, but you never know what can happen.
Igor Shesterkin as per Mollie Walker of NY Post.
Shesterkin is entering his final year of the contract which he signed back in 2021 for $22.67 million. During his tenure with the Rangers, he has led the team to the President’s Trophy, won the Vezina Trophy, and has been the NHL All-Star for past two seasons.
Fans react as Igor Shesterkin refuses $88 million deal from Rangers
While social media is going wild after it was revealed Igor Shesterkin refused the $88 million deal, the organization is confident they’ll finalize one soon. GM Chris Drury said, “…we certainly hope he’s here and a Ranger for a long time.”

Fans have mixed reactions on social media. One commented, “He rejected a deal for 11m per? Jesus, let him walk if he is going to try to ruin the team’s cap.” Another commented that the team should keep him considering his amazing performance in the past seasons.

Igor Shesterkin rejecting a contract that would have paid him $11M making him the highest paid goaltender in NHL history is lunacy. Almost 3M more than Swayman and Hellebuyck. You have to start to his question his ego and if he values getting paid more than winning. #NYR

As a die-hard fan of the New York Rangers, this is an absolute lowball of an offer from Chris Drury. He should apologize and offer Igor Shesterkin an eight year, $13.5 million AAV contract to make him the highest paid player in the history of the sport as he deserves. #NYR https://t.co/C9IkKIeooL

He's as elite as they come but goalies are weird and eating up too much cap can hurt the overall chances of winning. Igor earned his money though so you gotta pay him.

Imagine turning down $11 mil a year?

You don't give up the best player on the team. Pay this man

I’m shocked. I didnt think the rangers would go there so soon. Also, how is Igor turning this down. That would make him the highest paid goalie in history. Thats a win in my book.

lol. Please trade this dude Chris

Lmao he’s going to destroy their cap space you love to see it

Need to trade him if he is going to kill the cap. If he turned it down because he wants another year or something that can be negotiated, fair enough–otherwise, need to move on even if he is a beast. Start working the phones

What!!!!!!!!!! Whoa – if he gets more, this will turn the future goalie market on its head.

Don’t get me wrong, he deserves to be the highest paid goalie.. but 11m+ is wild
O cups ?

The Rangers have to be strategic with their approach as they have to manage how much they’ll give their goalie and balance out the other players as well. All the eyes are now on them with everyone wondering what the final deal result will be.
