Manchester City duo Ilkay Gundogan and Pep Guardiola wins Premier League player and manager of the month

Pep Guardiola won the manager of the month award for January

Manchester City’s player manager duo swept the Premier league awards for the month of January. Ilkay Gundogan won the player of the month while his manager, Pep Guardiola received the best manager award. 

Gundogan achieved the award ahead of teammate John Stones, Jack Grealish, Maddison and four other nominees. Pep Guardiola was nominated alongside David Moyes, Mikel Arteta and Graham Potter but emerged victories after Manchester City’s stellar run in January.

Manchester City are on a 15 match winning run in all competitions

Gundogan scored 5 league goals in his six appearances for Manchester City in January. Gundogan has regained his scoring touch for City this season and scored important goals against Chelsea and West Brom.

“I am very happy, but it is always a team effort. Have always been someone who does not pay a lot of attention to individual trophies but it is always nice to be recognised,” Gundogan said. “I don’t know what the secret was to getting there.“

He thanked his teammates for their role in his award.

“I just think it is the support I get from my teammates and all of the people around the team and the club. “I don’t take it for granted and will try to continue like that and maybe even do better.”

Pep Guardiola was also rewarded for guiding his side to victories in all 6 matches they played in January. City defeated Chelsea, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, West Brom and Sheffield in a fixture packed month for Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City are currently on a 15 game winning run in all competitions and have taken a considerable lead at the top of the table. They are 5 points clear of Manchester United and have a game I hand. Guardiola and Gundogan have been aptly rewarded with the monthly awards for maintaining City’s 100% record in January.
