“I’m fine in the West” Golden State Warriors show Ja Morant-led Grizzlies their place after Christmas day victory
Ja Morant
The Golden State Warriors have done the impossible by beating a mighty Ja Morant-led Memphis Grizzlies. No one could’ve seen it coming, especially at a time when the Warriors were without their star player Stephen Curry. On the other hand, the Grizzlies fielded their full-strength team with all their players returning from injuries. It was expected that the Memphis-based team would absolutely destroy the Warriors.
To be fair the Warriors put up quite a show, it seemed that all their defensive woes were patched up for this specific game. Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson led the Warriors scoring by putting up 32 and 23 points respectively while Draymond Green put together a strong-knit defense that the Memphis offense couldn’t penetrate.
However, Ja Morant’s lackluster performance can’t be ignored. Morant was seen struggling with the ball, missing continuous dunks, and not being able to coordinate well with the team. While he may have struggled, he managed to put up 36 points for the Grizzlies. With this performance, Golden State has shown that they are still the reigning champions.
Morant had earlier made comments on how his team had no one to fear in the Western Conference. In a recent interview, when asked which team he thought was the toughest competition in the league, to which he replied, “Celtics”. When asked which team in the West he thought was tough, he replied, “Nah.” “I’m fine in the west.” Clearly, his comments didn’t age well, as the Warriors showed him and his team their place.
Can Ja Morant lead to Grizzlies to a title run this season
Despite being young, the Memphis Grizzlies appear to be destined for greatness. In 2021, Ja Morant and the team broke a three-year postseason dry spell, and in 2022, they took home the franchise’s first playoff series victory since 2017. Fans are thrilled and anticipating a future Grizzlies title after an early-schedule finish for a youthful Memphis club. However, it’s a little too soon that they achieve something so big in such little time
One thing that last season’s playoff defeat to the Golden State Warriors revealed is that Ja Morant can’t do it all by himself, even with Jaren Jackson Jr. fit and in fighting form this year. In last year’s postseason, Morant was outstanding. He led the NBA Playoffs in assists per game with 9.8, averaging 27.1 points, 2.0 steals, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals a game.
Ja Morant has everything that it takes to be an All-Star and would definitely see title glory in the years to come but for that to happen he must put his attitude in check. History hasn’t been kind to arrogant youngsters who have no respect for the game, Ja Morant seems like one at the moment.
