‘I’m not gonna risk 100K USD against a guy who has terrible wrestling’ – Curtis Blaydes speaks out ahead of his fight against Derrick Lewis
Curtis Blaydes vs Derrick Lewis is just a few days away. The number 2 ranked heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes takes on number 4 ranked Derrick Lewis in a fight which was initially scheduled to take place on the 28th of November, last year. A win for either one of them, might possibly earn a title shot.
Speaking ahead of his fight to Ariel Helwani of ESPN MMA, Curtis Blaydes revealed that he wouldn’t be willing to risk 100K USD, fighting a guy who has terrible wrestling. He also seemed pretty confident of earning a victory against
‘I’m out here trying to feed my family‘
Blaydes was quoted as saying, “I know a lot of people don’t care; I have a family. I’m out here trying to feed my family. I don’t care if you want me to risk my win bonus, which is 100k USD, you want me to risk 100k USD, to stand and bang with a guy who has terrible wrestling. Nah! Nah! I’m not just gonna do it.“
Curtis Blaydes is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Alexander Volkov, last June. He is currently undefeated in his last four fights. The 14-2 fighter’s losses have come at the hand of the dangerous Francis Ngannou twice, once in 2016 and then in 2018. Barring that, Blaydes’s slate is clean with notable victories over Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem and Mark Hunt.
Derrick Lewis, on the other hand, is on a three fight win streak. The major difference between Blaydes and Lewis is the opponents against whom both the fighters have lost. While, Blaydes has two losses against Francis Ngannou, Lewis saw Ngannou off with a unanimous decision victory. And, Blaydes beat both Junior dos Santos and Mark Hunt, against whom Derrick Lewis suffered knockout losses.
