World No. 4 and the 3rd seed at the ongoing 2022 Indian Wells Open, Iga Swiatek had to grind out another 3-set win to move into the Round of 16 at the tournament for the second consecutive season having reached the 4th round in her main-draw debut last year as well.

Iga was up against 29th seeded Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the third round and after a battle of 2 hours and 18 minutes, Iga came out on top with a 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1 win. It was Iga’s 7th straight win as she comes to Indian Wells from a title in the WTA-1000 Qatar Open. Iga had a clinical outing making only 1 double fault while Clara had 7 to her name. Iga also gave only 1 breakpoint opportunity that was captured by Clara while Iga herself converted 6 of the 15 break points she had up for grabs.

“I’m pretty happy that I was able to come back again this season from one set down. I felt like physically I’m really well prepared and I could use all my strengths, even after two hours of playing. So I’m pretty proud of that. The placement of [Tauson’s] serve is pretty smart. It’s sometimes hard to predict where she’s going to serve and she’s serving pretty fast, so that was tricky.

“I think you have to put pressure on her too because she likes being aggressive as well and playing fast, and her hand is pretty strong. I feel like she was hitting full power sometimes when I didn’t put much pressure on her. So I needed to do that,” said Iga during her press conference after moving into the 4th round.

Iga will now be looking to reach the quarter-finals in the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the first time but it won’t be an easy task for the 2020 French Open champion. She will be taking on 3-time Grand Slam champion and 2019 edition’s runner-up Angelique Kerber in what will be the pair’s first meeting on the Tour.

While Iga has dropped sets in both of her matches, Kerber won her third-round match in straight-sets having won her second-round match in straight-sets. Iga will however be the favourite having clinched 17 Tour wins already, the most on the WTA Tour so far while Kerber just won her 2nd win of the season playing in just her 4th match of the season.
