The Dallas Mavericks blew a 27-point lead in their game against the Los Angeles Lakers, resulting in a 111-108 loss at the American Airlines Center. This marked the first time this season that an NBA team had lost after leading by a 27-point margin in 138 instances.

Despite being heavily favored to win, the Mavs struggled to maintain their momentum throughout the game, particularly in the second and third quarters. Head coach Jason Kidd was criticized for using only one timeout during this period, with some suggesting that this decision contributed to the team’s loss.

Kidd, however, denied that he was solely responsible for the defeat, stating that the entire team, “I’m not the savior here. I’m not playing. I’m watching, just like you guys. As a team, we’ve got to mature. … We’ve got to grow up.”

He also suggested that the team was affected by disagreements with the officials, with star player Luka Doncic frequently arguing calls and non-calls throughout the game.

Doncic, who finished with 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists, admitted that his disputes with the officials may have been a distraction, but did not believe that this was the primary reason for the team’s collapse. He argued that the team had simply “relaxed a little bit” and needed to work on maintaining their focus.

Doncic takes responsibility for critical mistake

Despite his impressive performance, Doncic made a critical mistake in the game’s most important possession. With just 18.1 seconds remaining and the Mavs trailing by three points, Doncic committed a turnover after attempting to save the ball from going over the half-court line. He later admitted that he had forgotten that he could go backcourt, describing the error as “my bad”.

This mistake proved costly for the AAC natives, who were unable to mount a comeback in the game’s final seconds. The Slovenian took full responsibility for the error, acknowledging that it was a “mistake” on his part. He also emphasized the need for the team to continue working on their performance, stating,“we’ve got to be better with that”.

Despite the loss, the Mavs remain a strong team in the Western Conference, with a record of 32-30 for the season. However, their collapse against the Lakers serves as a reminder that even the most talented teams can falter under pressure. As the season progresses, it will be up to the Mavs to continue improving their performance and maintaining their focus in order to compete for a championship.
