Played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the India vs. New Zealand 2026 T20 World Cup final not only shattered existing viewership records but also redefined digital sports consumption. With over 800 million viewers on JioHotstar, the match holds the top spot.

India defeated New Zealand in a one-sided affair in Ahmedabad by 96 runs. With a third consecutive half-century, Sanju Samson guided the Men in Blue to a massive first innings total of 255/5, with supporting acts coming from Abhishek Sharma (52 off 21), Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) and Shivam Dube (26 off 8). The Blackcaps could only manage 159 runs in the chase, before getting bowled out in the 19th over.

The victory was historic, as India became the first nation to win the T20 World Cup title thrice, moving past England and the West Indies’ tally.

India also became the first team ever to win the tournament on home soil, whilst the 255-run score ended up as the highest-ever recorded in a T20 WC final. Gautam Gambhir also become the first person to win the T20 World Cup both as a player (2007) and as a coach (2026).

The final viewership also broke previous records for live-streaming concurrency on JioHotstar, with a peak 821 million viewers. It was already at 21 million during the closing ceremony performance by Ricky Martin, and it grew to 42 million by the time the two captains walked out for the toss. Around 40 million viewers were tuned in for the Sanju SamsonAbhishek Sharma batting partnership, with the absolute peak in viewership occurring later in the night.

It interestingly did not occur during the match, but during the post-match presentation ceremony. Fans tuned in to see Suryakumar Yadav lift the trophy, with a record-breaking 817 million viewers watching it live on JioHotstar. With over 800 million total views, this match became the most-watched T20 game ever, significantly surpassing the 447 million viewership record set by the heated India-Pakistan group-stage clash.

The 2024 T20 World Cup final, which ended in a win for India as well, also witnessed a concurrent viewership of 53 million. Meanwhile, the 2026 T20 WC semi-final between India and England, played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, had recorded a peak of 65 million concurrent viewers.

Focus on Olympics 2028: India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav says no to retirement talks

While it was anticipated that Suryakumar Yadav would announce his retirement from international cricket at the end of the 2026 T20 World Cup final, the 35-year-old has decided otherwise. Speaking to reporters at a press conference, he hinted at his next challenge with the team.

India’s 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final made Yadav one of the few players to have won the T20 WC title twice, as he etched his name as one of the most successful T20I captains. Many believed that he would bring an end to his career, making way for younger recruits. Yadav, however, talked about putting the victory in the past and outlined the team’s next ambition after back-to-back T20 WC titles. 

Although celebrations continued late into the night, Suryakumar Yadav had made a decision. He shared his intent to continue playing T20Is, dismissing any rumors of possible retirement, and hoping to play in ICC events in the future as well. However, the 35-year-old Indian captain added that the primary focus would be on winning gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which he described as the ‘biggest event’. 

Next goal is Olympics gold and the T20 World Cup which is also in that year [in 2028].

Cricket will return to the multi-sport Olympics in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, marking its comeback after a 128-year absence. The 2028 edition will feature T20-format matches, with six teams competing in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
