The first T20I between India and Australia played at the Manuka Oval in Canberra today ran into a bit of a controversy when India decided to bring on Yuzvendra Chahal as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja after the latter was hit on the helmet by a bouncer from Mitchell Starc.

The incident happened during the 20th over but Jadeja continued batting and got 9 runs off the next 3 balls he faced to take India past 160, a score which ultimately proved to be enough. At the innings break however, Jadeja reportedly complained of dizziness which led to the Indian team doctor deciding that he shouldn’t continue.

Yuzvendra Chahal was chosen as Jadeja’s substitute and the former went on to bag three wickets and also walk away with the Man of the Match award. This concussion substitution has divided cricketers and fans on Twitter with some stating that India had every right to replace Jadeja while others speculated that the concussion could’ve been an excuse for a hamstring injury that Jadeja was struggling with.

Michael Vaughan not happy with India’s substitution

During the course of the match following the concussion substitution made by India, former England captain Michael Vaughan took to Twitter to express his views on the same. He said, “No Doctor or Physio came out to Test Jadeja for concussion … he then looks like his has done something to his leg … then they pull the concussion replacement .. !!!!! (sic).”

Vaughan’s views have attracted both approval and criticism. Australia head coach Justin Langer seemed to disagree with match referee David Boon’s decision to agree the decision but skipper Aaron Finch stated after the match that it was a doctor’s decision so they shouldn’t challenge it.
