India vs England 2021: India bowl out England for 205; reach 24/1 in reply on Day 1

Indian Cricket Team

India came up with yet another strong performance on Day 1 to ensure they went into stumps the happier of the two sides in the fourth and final test against England. Having lost the toss yet again, India were asked to bowl first and it didn’t take long for the in-form bowlers to exert their influence by picking up regular wickets against a shaky English batting line-up. The rejigged deeper batting line-up of the visitors folded cheaply yet again.
With all the talk surrounding the pitch ahead of the encounter, the pitch did not offer as much turn as it did in the second test in Chennai or the third in Ahmedabad. It had good purchase but wasn’t an unplayable track by any means. The English batters once again lost their wickets to lapses in concentration and poor decision making. With their below-par showing in the first innings, their chances of drawing the series also dwindled although their chances can’t be ruled out just yet.
Spinners scalp eight wickets as England crumble

India began the day with pace from both ends as expected and while Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj troubled the English openers a bit. They were unable to provide a breakthrough. The wicket arrived off Axar Patel‘s second ball as he had Dom Sibley out bowled. He then went on to remove Zak Crawley who went for the glory shot. Siraj then came up with a double blow removing both Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow who was looking promising.
Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope were then involved in a rescue act with the former getting to fifty. His stay was cut short when Washington Sundar had him trapped in front. Dan Lawrence then stroked his way to a gritty 46 as well before the spinners sent him and Pope back to the pavilion. The tail didn’t wag for long and Axar ended with 4 while Ravichandran Ashwin ended with 3 to shoot out England for 205.
In reply, India got off to a horror start as Shubman Gill who was taking first strike in a test for the first time in his career was trapped in front by James Anderson for a duck off his third ball. Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara then played with great caution to take India to stumps unscathed.
