Rahul Tewatia who was given his maiden call-up to the national team has now been dealt a huge blow to his hopes of debuting for the country as he has failed to pass a fitness test, according to reports. It is understood that he will be given another chance before the T20 series against England begins to prove his fitness, failing which he will be removed from the squad.

Tewatia was the story of the Indian Premier League (IPL) last season as he scripted a sensational comeback story to become one of the best all-rounders in the tournament. After a struggling start to his innings against the Kings XI Punjab in a stiff chase, Tewatia turned it around to take Rajasthan Royals to the highest run chase ever in IPL history. He then followed it up with more cameos and lusty blows throughout the tournament.

Rahul Tewatia and Varun Chakravarthy in danger of missing out

According to a report in The Telegraph India, Rahul Tewatia as well as Varun Chakravarthy have failed the fitness test conducted by the Indian management which sets forth certain minimum requirements. A score of 17.1 is given as the cutoff in case of the Yo-Yo test while players will also have to run a distance of 2 kilometers within 8.3 minutes in order to be eligible for selection to the national team.

“It has been introduced to push fitness standards and maintain endurance. They will get more than one chance,” a BCCI source reportedly said. It is noteworthy that Varun Chakravarthy was already called up for India’s tour of Australia but he had to miss it due to an injury. Now, he faces another hurdle before he makes his debut. Both Varun and Tewatia would be raring to ace the next test.
