Ravichandran Ashwin was an absolute pain for England throughout their series against India that concluded today with the hosts’ win in the fourth and final test in Ahmedabad. After an impressive showing in Australia that saw him improve on his often talked about away record, Ashwin came out all guns blazing in the series against England to completely spin a web around the Englishmen.

Ashwin was excellent in the first test although his 9 wickets came in a losing cause. He then came up with a magnum opus in the second test as he not only scalped 8 wickets but also scored a stunning century on a track that was difficult to bat on. He followed the performance with another 7 wickets in the third test that was dominated by Axar Patel. Again, in the fourth test, he picked up 8 wickets to finish with 32 for the series. He was rightly adjudged the Man of the Series for his efforts.

Ravichandran Ashwin picked up his 30th five-wicket-haul in test cricket today and moved level with James Anderson. With regard to Indians, he is now behind only Anil Kumble who took 35. Further, Ashwin also became the first Indian to pick up more than 30 wickets in a series twice having done it against South Africa in 2015. Further, he joined an elite list of 5 players who have picked up more than 30 wickets and scored a century in a series although he is the first to do it in a four-match series.

Speaking on being named the Man of the Series for the 8th time in his career (which is an Indian record), he said, “The last four months have been quite a ride. I didn’t think I’d make a hundred in Chennai, I went with the flow because my form with the bat wasn’t great. I didn’t think I’d start in the XI in Australia, but after all the injuries, especially to Jadeja, there was more responsibility on me and I’m content with my performances in Australia and here. Being desperate is bad, being content is bad, but it’s important for me to be happy, and I’ve stayed on my feet, and worked out batsmen and I’m happy it has worked out well for me. If you put a board on what Rishabh has gone through in the last year, I am extremely happy to see him succeed.
