India vs England 2021: Sunil Gavaskar feels Krunal Pandya cannot be India’s fifth bowler; backs Prasidh Krishna for Test debut

Krunal Pandya

India was thumped in the second ODI as visitors chased down a target of 337 with ease. The visitors took apart the Indian bowling attack as they reached the target with 39 balls to spare. All-rounder Krunal Pandya failed to check the run flow in his second ODI as he conceded a whopping 72 runs at the economy of 12 runs per over.

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels that Krunal cannot become India’s fifth bowling option. He opines that Krunal along with his brother Hardik Pandya should bowl 10 overs between them Gavaskar adds that a specialist spinner like Yuzvendra Chahal to bowl his full quota on a surface like the one used for the second ODI.

I will say the Indian bowling was probably a little weak because Krunal Pandya cannot be your fifth bowler, he cannot be a bowler who bowls 10 overs. You need a bowler like Yuzvendra Chahal on such pitches, who can bowl 10 overs,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

“Pandya brothers can bowl 10 overs together but if the Indian team has to perform well and win the next match they will have to think a lot about their fourth, fifth and sixth bowlers,” he added.

“Selection committee must consider seriously Prasidh Krishna for red ball as well,” Sunil Gavaskar

Prasidh Krishna
Prasidh Krishna

Prasidh Krishna has made a sensational debut into his ODI career. The 25-year-old claimed four wickets in his debut ODI against England. Prasidh then struck twice in the 37th over in the second game, which included an unplayable yorker to get rid of Jos Buttler. Gavaskar feels that he should be consisdered for Test cricket given his seam position and impeccable accuracy.

I tell you what, with those seam up deliveries, he is someone that the Indian selection committee must consider seriously for red ball (Tests) as well,” Gavaskar said during his TV commentary on Friday. “Just like Jasprit Bumrah, from T20s and ODIs, has now become India’s premium bowler in the Test format, Prasidh Krishna with his pace and the seam-up position could be a very, very good red ball bowler as well.

India and England lock horns in the series decider on Sunday. While India will be looking to clean sweep the tour, the visitors will be keen to salvage some pride by lifting the ODI trophy and finish the tour on a high.
