India vs England 2021: WATCH – Mohammed Siraj celebrates with pure joy as Ravichandran Ashwin gets his century
Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin came up with a knock for the ages on day 3 of the second Test against England and provided a perfect response to all critics who had been stating that the pitch was unplayable for the batters. Coming in to bat with India in a precarious position, Ashwin took India to a position from which it is impossible to lose now.

The Chepauk home crowd kept cheering on their hero as the all-rounder displayed admirable determination to hang in there and come up with quick and important runs for his side. With his hundred, he went second list in the list of number of matches where a player has picked up a five-wicket haul and scored a century as he achieved the same for the third time. He is behind only Sir Ian Botham in the list.

When No. 10 batsman Ishant Sharma got out, Ashwin was on 77 and a century looked out of reach when No. 11 Mohammed Siraj walked in. However, the pacer gave good company to his partner and survived throughout to ensure that Ashwin got to his hundred. After Ashwin reached the landmark, Siraj started smoking sixes of his own as well to add to the drama unfolding.

The moment that stood out was however, Siraj’s reaction of pure and unbridled joy when the 100th run came off Ashwin’s bat. The 26-year-old celebrated as if he himself had scored the century and it only went on to show the team spirit and friendship prevalent in the Indian team. By the time Ashwin got out for 106, the damage was done as England are staring down the barrel of a defeat.
