In Short
  • Carlos Alcaraz is undefeated this season and has advanced to the fourth round of Indian Wells.
  • Casper Ruud aims for an upset after a challenging season, currently ranked World No. 13.
  • The match is scheduled for March 11, 2025, at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Carlos Alcaraz has continued from where he stopped at the Doha Open last month. The Spaniard doesn’t look like one willing to drop his current red-hot form as he has sealed his place in the fourth round of the Indian Wells. But he will face former World No.2 Casper Ruud for a place in the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 100 tournament.

Ruud, who has won just five matches and lost five this season, looks eager to prove a point at Indian Wells. After reaching the third round of the Australian Open in February, he dropped in the ATP rankings. The World No.13 would be aiming for a big upset against Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Casper Ruud: Match Preview

Carlos Alcaraz is yet to lose a match this season. The World No.1 claimed his elusive Australian Open title last month after beating Novak Djokovic in the final. He then continued with the momentum at the Doha Open, beating Arthur Fils to claim his maiden Qatar title and his second tour-level trophy of the season.

At Indian Wells, he looked the same in his opening match against Grigor Dimitrov. Dimitrov, who returned from a career-ending injury, was no match for the Spaniard, who breezed past him in straight sets. On Monday (March 9), Alcaraz survived a tricky encounter against Arthur Rinderknech to progress to the last 16. He trailed by a set but rallied to turn the match around for a 6(6)-7, 6-3, 6-2.

On the other hand, Casper Ruud kicked off his campaign at the United Cup, where he claimed a mind-blowing win against Alex de Minaur. But after that, failed to progress beyond his first match at the Auckland Classics. In Melbourne, he won two matches before exiting, and then at the Dallas Open, he lost to Sebastian Korda in the third round.

At the Mexican Open, he lost his opening match to unseeded Wu Yibing in straight sets. However, things have changed for the Norwegian star at Indian Wells as he defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 7-6(6), before coming from a set down to beat Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round at the California desert.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Casper Ruud: Match Prediction

Carlos Alcaraz struggled with an ankle issue in the second set of his third-round win against Arthur Rinderknech. But that wouldn’t be an issue for the Spaniard, as fans can easily remember he had a similar issue at the Australian Open, when he had to play for over an hour with cramps against Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.

Besides that, Alcaraz, who parted ways with his former coach recently, loves playing at Indian Wells. In 2022, he reached his first ATP Masters 1000 at the tournament. In 2023, he won the title, and the following year he defended it with little pressure. Last year, he reached the semi-finals of the tournament before losing to Jack Draper in three sets.

He also holds a 5-1 lead over Casper Ruud in their head-to-head record on tour. Both players met once last year, at the Japan Open, where Alcaraz produced a standout performance to beat the Norwegian star. The only time Ruud managed to beat Alcaraz was at the ATP Finals in 2024.

Match Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
