The four-time Grand Slam champion is chasing his first title of the season. Before arriving in Indian Wells, Sinner played two tournaments. Eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic stopped his bid for his third consecutive title at the Australian Open with a five-set win in the semifinals.

Later at the Qatar Open, the 24-year-old lost to Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals. This marked the first time Sinner lost two tournaments in a row without reaching the finals for the first time since 2024 (Wimbledon and the Canadian Open).

Medvedev, on the other hand, has reached back-to-back finals of this tournament. There was uncertainty around Medvedev’s participation in Indian Wells as he was stuck in Dubai amidst the turmoil across the Middle East and the Gulf due to America and Israel’s war with Iran.

Despite his chaotic journey from Dubai to Indian Wells, the in-form Russian produced strong performances one after the other and, in fact, has yet to drop a set. In the quarterfinals, he stopped Jack Draper from inching closer to his title defense, and later in the semifinals, he ended Alcaraz’s 16-match winning streak that started at the Australian Open and continued at the Qatar Open. Medvedev has improved his head-to-head record over the seven-time Grand Slam champion to 3-6.

Before arriving in Indian Wells, the 30-year-old received the walkover from Tallon Griekspoor in the Dubai Tennis Championships final, winning the title in the tournament for the second time in his career. Medvedev kicked off his campaign for the 2026 season at the Brisbane International, where he defeated Brandon Nakashima in the final. Last year in Indian Wells, Medvedev lost to eventual runner-up Holger Rune in the semifinals.
