Before arriving in California, Joao Fonseca had just one win on tour and was struggling incredibly with his game. The Brazilian teenager has now won three matches in Indian Wells with two of them coming against players in the top 30. He will be looking forward to earning his first top-five victory when he faces Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.
Sinner is still searching for his first title three months into the new season. The Italian star, who finished 2025 by winning four of his last five tournaments, has never been to the final of the Indian Wells Open. Joao Fonseca began the year with injuries that forced him to withdraw from the Brisbane International. When he returned to the court after a back problem, he crashed out in the first round of the Australian Open and the Argentina Open. In Doha, he couldn’t get past big-hitting Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals, ending the first two months of the season without a title.

The Brazilian teenager, who managed to win one match in two months has dropped just one set at the California desert. Two of his wins came at the Basel Indoor tournament in October last year. But Fonseca has never faced a top 5 player in his career, Jannik Sinner will be his first.
