Joao Fonseca vs. Jannik Sinner: Match Preview
Joao Fonseca began the year with injuries that forced him to withdraw from the Brisbane International. When he returned to the court after a back problem, he crashed out in the first round of the Australian Open and the Argentina Open. At the Rio Open, he failed to earn consecutive wins, exiting in the second round.
However, he has experienced a change of fortune at Indian Wells. He defeated Belgium’s Raphael Collignon 7-6(2), 6-4 in the first round. He then saved two match points against Karen Khachanov, coming from a set down to beat the Russian star. On Sunday (March 9), he powered past home favorite Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-4 in the third round.

On the other hand, Jannik Sinner was deemed the favorite to win the Australian Open but he failed to live up to expectations, losing to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals in five sets. In Doha, he couldn’t get past big-hitting Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals, ending the first two months of the season without a title.
He’s back on the court in Indian Wells after missing the tournament last year due to suspension for doping. He defeated Dalibor Svrcina 6-1, 6-1 to reach the third round. He then downed Canadian star Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2 to reach the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the fifth consecutive time.
Joao Fonseca vs. Jannik Sinner: Match Prediction
Joao Fonseca is into the fourth round of an ATP Masters 1000 for the first time in his career after a dominant performance in Indian Wells. The Brazilian teenager, who managed to win one match in two months has dropped just one set at the California desert. He now holds a mind-blowing 7-1 record against players in the top 30 since September.

Two of his wins came at the Basel Indoor tournament in October last year. But Fonseca has never faced a top 5 player in his career, Jannik Sinner will be his first. He has faced the likes of Alex de Minaur and Jack Draper in the past, losing to both players. Meanwhile, Sinner is chasing to earn 100 ATP Masters 1000 wins at Indian Wells.
The Italian currently holds 96 wins and he’s four away from hitting the landmark. Also, he’s seeking his first title of the season, and a win against Fonseca is expected. The World No.2 is the second favorite to win the tournament as Carlos Alcaraz is set to suffer a defeat this season after two tournaments.
Match Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
