Novak Djokovic has continued his good form on tour this season at the Indian Wells Open. The 38-year-old had been told by some analysts to retire, but after his run at the Australian Open, he shut down his critics. He will face a tough task to reach the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells as he takes on British star and defending champion Jack Draper.

Draper returned to tour after eight months at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The former World No.5 is seeking to defend the Indian Wells title; if not, he will find himself outside the Top 20 next week. However, despite just coming from injury, he has already claimed his first top 20 win of the season at the California desert.

Novak Djokovic kicked off his season at the Australian Open after skipping the Adelaide International. The former World No.1 was deemed the third favorite after Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. But he stunned the world in the semi-finals of the tournament, beating Sinner in five sets after four hours in Melbourne.

The Serbian legend didn’t feature in any tournament in February as he enjoyed his time at the Winter Olympics. He returned to the court at Indian Wells, kicking off his campaign against Kamil Majchrzak, coming from a set down to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. He then overcame Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the third round to keep his campaign going.

On the other hand, Jack Draper withdrew from the Australian Open days before the tournament kicked off. The British star had suffered bone bruising and a shoulder injury in the space of two months and that forced him to be sidelined for eight months. He came back at the Dubai Tennis Championships, winning just one match before losing to Arthur Rinderknech in three sets.

The 24-year-old returned to the Indian Wells Open as defending champion, which is his only ATP Masters 1000 title. He continued his comeback with a more commanding performance with a win over Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut before triumphing over World No.20 Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 7-5 in the third round of the tournament.

Novak Djokovic has never won the Indian Wells since 2016, ten years ago. For the past two seasons, he has not gone beyond the third round of the tournament. He’s certainly not at his best in Indian Wells, as he has struggled to maintain his high level, but he has often risen to the occasion in moments that matter. He did the same thing at the Australian Open, even though he didn’t drop so many sets until the quarter-finals. However, he’s still a player to beat when he’s in good form and will be seeking to get the better of Draper.

Draper, who has revealed that he will be back in the top 5 in 2027, has yet to give his highest-level performance on the court. He holds a 0-1 head-to-head record against Djokovic, with their only meeting coming at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. He made his Grand Slam debut at the tournament and claimed the first set before Djokovic rallied back for the win.
